So many inductions

It seems like everyone gets induced these days. Whats the deal? Do babies just not want to come out on their own anymore?

Maybe it just seems that way but all I hear about are inductions.

Re: So many inductions

  • So far, my kid has taken no steps to get out of here! My OB doesn't suggest her patients remain pregnant after 41 weeks, so that is when my induction is scheduled for.
Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in. 6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)

  • I go for my 40 week appt. this Thursday, the doc will schedule an induction for me for 41 weeks if baby hasn't come by then. I've noticed the inductions have been for many reason--Pre-e, GD, late, etc.
  • I wish someone would induce me... I've had enough.  Plus due date is just 18 days away... right around the same time my husband (whose an executive chef will be reopening/relaunching a restaurant and menu....)

    One induction please!!!

  • I think everyone has their own reasons but a lot are not necessary anymore.  My induction w/ DS was b/c of high BP at 40 wks and this time I'm electively inducing at 39 wks.

  • My Dr prefers to not induce unless there is a medical reason. If I asked him to, he would do it, but I would prefer not to b/c I don't want that extra chance of a c/s.

  • I am being induced tomorrow because I am GD and there is another medical reason that I don't talk about often.  But, it is better to know the baby is coming at a certain time to prevent a c-section needed.

The induction could end in a c/s... but I had to mentally prepare for a c/s for another reason anyway...

  • No progress for me for several weeks. So OB discussing induction next week for 41 weeks, since that's when my practice does them. It does seem like there have been more than usual.

  • I trust my doctor and he says it's better to induce me at 39 weeks because I'm pretty small and after the 39th week the baby starts gaining like a pound a week which will make her bigger and much harder for me to deliver. At 1st that made me a little uncomfortable because i wanted everything to happen naturally but now that I'm really close and supper tired and read a lot about it i think it's a great idea especially since it doesn't make a difference to the baby's development

Ditto to this.  Mine is tomorrow.  Plus, over the last four weeks there has been NO change at any of my weekly appointments leading my Dr. to believe that I would not be giving birth before my 40 week mark anyway.

  • This might be an unpopular statement but...

Our society is pretty impatient - doctors and patients are both guilty.   There are plenty of good reasons to induce - say pre-e or a baby not doing well on NSTs past 41 weeks.  But there are also a lot of doctors who don't even follow the ACOG guidelines on induction (for example the one that says induction based on "big baby" is not recommended).  There are also lots of docs who would rather induce so a patient will deliver on their schedule instead of nature's.  Our crazy high induction rate in the US in turn leads to a crazy high c-section rate (since being induced increases your risk of a c-section pretty substantially).

Am I the only person who's doctor will let them go to 42 weeks?  They would monitor me very closely for the last two weeks, but my practice doesn't induce until 42 weeks unless there is medically a reason to do so earlier.
