Preemies

Totally unexpected preemie?

I mean I assume none of us expected to have a preemie when we started but I was wondering if anyone on here just went into labor early with no real health issues, pregnancy related or not, or previous expectations of doing so? Not to say it is any easier if you know ahead of time, just kind of wondering about experiences.

My water basically broke or had a slow leak at 33.1 weeks. I went in the next morning to determine if I was in fact leaking fluid. Once they found out, I was admitted and going to be on best rest until 34 weeks when they would induce me. Full blown labor started the next morning at 2am and LO was here by 5pm at 33.3 weeks.

They say they will never be able to determine what caused the break. My other 2 went full term. I didn't have any pregnancy related concerns and had been healthy leading up to and through out each pregnancy. Pilar, our preemie, was very strong and needed little intervention when she arrived. In the end, we discovered there was a knot in her cord and that maybe she just knew it would be safer to come out. Smart girl! =)

Anyone else have a similar situation?

Re: Totally unexpected preemie?

  • My son came 9 weeks early which was totally unexpected.  I woke up one morning in labor and when I got to the hospital for monitoring my water broke.  They tried to stop my contractions but nothing would.  I had a completely healthy normal pregnancy and they have no idea why I went into labor or my water broke.  Luckily he is a very healthy 5 month old baby now and you would never know he was a preemie by looking at him.  :)

  • My son was born at 26w2d after being hospitalized for 2 weeks.  I went into the ER at 24w2d and was dilating with no prior warning.  I had the easiest pregnancy ever prior to that point and I was very diligent about eating healthy and doing all the right things.  My mom (and both grandma's) also had 4 textbook pregnancies!
  • I had an irritable uterus from 19 weeks on (that I could feel) but it never changed my cervix and I had a negative FFN test 10 days before I woke up to gushing water at 34w3d. I was induced a week later and never went into labor. My pPROM was unexplained...my body just doesn't like being pregnant.
  • I had a completely normal, uneventful, surprisingly comfortable pregnancy until 34w5d when my water broke for reasons no one can figure out. Up until then I was the picture of perfect pregnancy and looked and felt the part- I sometimes wish that I had some indication that something might go wrong, but on the other hand being blissfully ignorant that I would have anything other than a happy, healthy baby I would take home 48 hours after labor meant that I enjoyed my pregnancy up until the abrupt end.

  • I had a totally normal twin pregnancy until it wasn't anymore.  I also have a 2yo who was induced post dates so no one was expecting a problem.  I went for a routine growth ultrasound and was told the babies looked great but I was completely effaced and dilating.  Once admitted I was having contractions I could not feel and they could not stop labor.  My OB seems to think the IC was from how fast my uterus expanded as I went from you're pregnant?  to are you due tomorrow? overnight.
  • OP, our stories could be interchanged word for word,  except I didn't go into labour on my own and was induced at 34 weeks, and no knot in his cord.

  • My ds was born at 25 weeks 6 days due to an uterine infection that caused a placental abruption. I had a completely uncomplicated pregnancy up until 24 weeks 5 days when I was admitted to the hospital for PTL and severe bleeding. I was on hospital bedrest for a week before he was born. It was definitely unexpected. We never thought we would have a preemie.

  • My DD2 was born at 34 weeks. My water broke at 8pm and she arrived at 10:45pm. The docs have no explanation except that maybe my body only likes to carry babies until they reach 5 lbs. DD1 was born at 36 weeks, 5 days at 5lbs, 2 oz. DD2 was 5 lbs.
  • Totally unexpected. Had a perfect pregnancy, no morning sickness, bleeding, cramping, felt great! No Pre-E, GD, nothing. Woke up with what I thought was just some RLP because I had felt his drop, within 24 hours the contractions were 5-7 min apart. Went to L&D and they tried to stop my contractions but couldn't and he was born a 31w5d. My water didn't break on its own, they only thing they could think of was maybe an incompetent cervix and maybe a bit of an abruption because of how  the placenta looked (even though I had no bleeding at all). Our Christmas surprise!

  • I had a completely healthy, normal pregnancy. It was rather easy as well until the night I had her. I had gone to bed (at 33w2d) around 10pm, and woke up at 1:30am to go pee. That was when I noticed I was bleeding like crazy. Went straight to the hospital and.started cramping on the way there. It felt like period cramps, not contractions. When I got there they hooked me up to monitors in triage, and they found her hb around 30-40bpm. I was then rushed in for an emergency c-section. I was obviously put under general anesthesia for it. When they took her out she was no longer breathing. After they bagged her she started breathing again. Needless to say, if I had even gotten there a couple minutes later, she wouldn't have lived. I had a full, sudden placental abruption.

  • I started bleeding at 32w. I called the OB, who had me go to the ER. (The week before I was at the doctor who told me I was "perfect" and there was "no reason" I should worry about early labor!)

They hooked me up to monitors and discovered I was in mild labor. I was given meds to stop contractions and checked in over-night to monitor my progress. At 2 a.m. I used the restroom & told the nurse I'm still bleeding & in labor and she denied it. I forced her to feel my belly with her hands and she literally ran out of the room.  She came back within minutes to tell me the doctor told her to prep me for a c-section - the monitors were not on me correctly and they were not picking up the labor nor the fact that her heart rate was dropping.

DH had gone home to let dogs out & rest. By the time he got back, I was on the table and LO was pulled out literally 30 seconds after he got there. We have no pictures!

The determined I had placental abruption and a giant clot had formed between the uterus& placenta. Its probably due to my RA and I've been told I need to see a specialist before TTC again.

  • My LO was delivered at 34w3d after finding out at 34w0d that he was IUGR and the placenta had stopped functioning. I noticed decreased fetal movement at about 33 weeks and begged my OB for an NST and an ultrasound. My OB finally agreed after much pleading and I was scheduled the next day for my NST and ultrasound. They noticed that DS had not grown since 29 weeks and he failed his BPP. I was sent to high risk that day and he passed his BPP. They were going to keep me pregnant until 37 weeks, but baby had other plans. I went back to the hospital and DS scored 0 on his BPP and was in distress by that point. I was delivered by emergency c-section immediately. I had, what I thought to be, a completely normal pregnancy up until 34 weeks. We were shocked to learn that I would be delivering immediately.

  • my lo was born via c section at 30 weeks 1 day. uneventful pregnancy until may 31 2010. Sever pain sent me to the ER. after being transfered to another hospital (they thought gallbladder, and didn't feel comfortable removing it while i was pregnant in case baby needed help). At other hospital found out i had severe HELLP, and was told the baby had to come out.

9 months later... you'd never know he was early.

  • DS was born at 34 weeks.  Delivered DS at 9pm.  Less than 12 hours after my perfect no problems 34 week appt.

Totally normal pg, every check up fine and routine. MS and swelling but nothing out of the ordinary. I was in the docs office the morning I delivered for a routine check up - everything normal scheduled my 36 week visited.  Did some shopping and got lunch.  Went back to work, water broke at 3:30pm (I was in denile). Called my husband it was his birthday - he was having cake at his office, I said no problem call me back when you get a chance.  Called ob - said " I thought by water broke"  said I could come in if a want, they had a 4:30appt.  Did not pack a bag told DH who called me back he could come if he wanted we could go out to dinner for his bday by the docs office. Got check and ultrasounded and then sent to hospital (same complex as doc office). Check into the hospital at 6:30pm ob met me there and checked me I was 8cm. Until that pointed I wasn't convinced I was having a baby. Ob's kept saying that we would discuss options but I think I was going faster and was more calm then they expected.

A pg friend ask me and my bff when our sons were about a year how we knew it was contractions. Bff said she went to the hospital 4x each time swearing this was it - she ended up witha scheduled c-section at 41 wks.  I said I went once swearing the whole way I was not having a baby and had a baby with in 6 hours.

  • My water just broke. Looking back I'm pretty sure I had a slow leak starting at 35 weeks but I thought I was having incontinence since the baby was so low.
  • I had a pretty normal, uneventful, pregnancy. I did have GD. I was 33w1d when my water broke for reasons no one can figure out. My water broke on Saturday 1am and I had my son Sunday at 1pm. He was 5lbs 2ozs. He is now 9 months and weighs 20lbs :)
  • Wow, that is one heck of a knot! You generally don't see true tight knots like that. Smart girl, indeed!
