That is the name of a character in Troy (played by Rose Byrne) and they pronounce it Brih-SAY-iss, IIRC.
This. She was a character in The Illiad (which of course the movie Troy is based on). She's pretty famous for almost causing the Greeks to lose the Trojan war because Achilles got butt-hurt over her and refused to fight for awhile.

I'm LOLing at the thought of a butt-hurt demigod. Like he's crying into his Haagen-Daas while he watches Serendipity for the 18th time.
Barely related but funny story: When we saw Troy in the theatre, during that scene that the Trojans attack the Greeks in the wee hours of the morning, with the giant flaming balls (teehee), someone's cellphone went off. It was in the beginning of the scene right when Achilles, who was spooning post-coitus with Briseis, looks up as he must here the Greeks approaching. It was time perfectly, and it looked like he woke up and looked around because of the cellphone. Everyone in the theatre started giggling then full-on cracked up.

I like this. A lot, actually. But it would take me a while to get used to it... hmmm
On the topic of ancient Greek names, I love Persephone (Per-SEPH-oh-nee, with Seph/Sephy as a NN), but I could never get DH to agree to it. Truly, I don't think I'd have the balls to actually do it, either.

When we study mythology, the kids always pronounce it Purse-a-phone.

Wow. I can't believe someone decided that the best name for their child is the sex slave of a tragic hero. Of all the great characters in classic literature, they choose Briseis??!?!?!

Yep! I knew a woman who named her little girl this.

I find this pronunciation to be very pretty. Too bad the spelling makes it so difficult to prounce.

I do, too, but yeah, the spelling would be a problem.
Bri-SAY-is is the correct pronunciation, apparently. https://www.pantheon.org/miscellaneous/pronunciations.html

In comparison to Hippodameia, Briseis is quite lovely.
Hippdameia (Hippo-DAY-mee-ah?) sounds like a disease.
