Air travel: Check the carseat base??

We have a carseat that is basically the carrier which snaps into the base.  We will check the carrier ans troller at the gate, but what the heck do we do with the carseat base (we have to bring that with us).  Do we check it?  I dont want ti to get lost or damaged...

  • Why do you have to bring it? You can use the seat with the vehicle buckle. If it's imperative that you have it, I guess I'd gate-check it in some sort of bag.

  • you don't have to take it with you. the base is merely for convenience. You can strap the carrier in the old fashioned way with a seat belt.
  • Is there a specific reason you have to take the base? The carseat can be used just as safely without it. I think it would be much less of a pita if to just leave the base at home.
  • If you are going somewhere where you will be renting a car you can rent the entire car seat as well if you are interested in doing that. Otherwise I guess I would check the base.
  • I am trying to figure out what we will be doing about this too.  I haven't yet decided if I just want to leave the base at home.  We will be driving a lot when we get there so I don't know.
  • You can check it either with your luggage, but then it counts against you as a 'bag', or gate check it with everything else. But I usually just never bothered and just used the seatbelt.

  • Not all carseats can be used without base (though, ours can). But they do make covers for the bases, as well as the strollers. You can check with the manufacturers website, or like at BRU.
  • Ooooh, wow , ok..  I did not know you could use it without the base.  Thanks.  We will read the manual and see how we can do this.

  • Actually, I was going to say that I stopped using mine with the base when Ethan was like, a week old. I HATED the base. I felt like it made the car seat too tippy. Its much easier to just use the seat belt.
