How to pass the 1hr glucose test?

Is there something that I can do to make myself pass the test. For eg. if I cut out all fruits, juices and sweets until the test (on Friday) will that guarantee that I pass?  Or are my levels more impacted by my body in general instead of diet?

Re: How to pass the 1hr glucose test?

  • Why would you want to falsely pass this test? If you really do have gestational diabetes you need to know to properly control your diet. If not, it can have very negative effects on you and your baby. I hate to be mean, but this is a very stupid and ignorant way of thinking. You need to just eat the way you usually would and take the test.

  • No there is no diet that will guarantee you will pass.

Its about how your body is reacting to your pregnancy not what you eat for a week or a few days before the test.

You definitely don't want to falsely pass the test. Plus, it's about a lot more than just not eating sweets. If you're concerned about eating properly for the test, call your doctor and ask what you should do. Mine had pretty specific recommendations for the night before and morning of but even following those won't guarantee that I'll pass.

  • If diabetes is not controlled properly, there are chances it can harm you and the baby. Even if you have GD, just be happy that you won't be diabetic after the baby comes. I am type 1, insulin dependent, and it sucks!

Mine didn't tell me any of this.  She just said no doughnuts for breakfast the morning of.  Maybe I will do this.  Thanks

  • You should limit all of those things for your entire pregnancy. But, no changing your diet to "cram for the test" will have no impact.

  • I think you probably meant to ask what you can do to make sure you don't accidentally fail the test. The only thing I can suggest is to follow the guidelines that they gave you about what you should and shouldn't eat the day of the test. I haven't done it yet but from what I remember from the other times you're not allowed to eat anything before the test. It's hard to do, but worth it in order to get correct results and not have to retake it. I do suggest a high protein/high fat meal the night before, it will sustain you longer than a carb heavy one. What everyone else said is true, if you have GD you'll want to know. Good luck!

  • You'll either pass it or you won't.  Why try and fake it out in case there actually is a problem that could be dealt with??  You could cause your LO serious harm!  Tongue Tied

this is mean.  and undeserved, i feel, given that the original question wasn't that inflammatory.

fwiw, i asked my mws the same question last time i was pregnant.  i am needle phobic and do not think that i would be able to handle the 3-hour test without being sedated.  it is in my best interest to make sure that my one-hour test results are as accurate as possible.  my mws understood my fears and gave me instructions on what to eat the day of the test.

    here they are:

"you must eat before your test.  before your appointment, eat a meal of protein rich foods and vegetables.  some examples of protein rich foods are nuts, dairy, unsweetened soy, eggs, and meat.  in the four hours before the test, avoid foods that contain simple and complex sugars (e.g., splenda, raw sugar, bagels, pie, fruit juice, energy drinks, white rice).  whole grains (whole wheat toast, brown rice, quinoa) are fine."

based on these instructions, i ate celery with unsweetened peanut butter for breakfast the day of my test during my last pregnancy.  i plan to have the same breakfast this time too.  i'll report back on how it goes.

  • I had an appointment yesterday and didn't even know that my one hour glucose test was then until i got there. Im glad I didnt know because I would have stressed about it and tried to not eat right. well i passed without changing anything in my diet and i ate a granolla bar like 20 mins before that had dark chocolate in it so i dont understand why they tell you not to eat before.

  • You do realize that you'll be drinking a beverage loaded with glucose, right? As I understand it, the test measures how your body processes that sugar.

I'm with everyone else, I don't get trying to "fool" the test.

  • I was given the advice to not eat a whole tub of ice cream the night before... the person giving this advice to me was speaking from experience :)

She then had to take the three hour test... of course she passed because she didn't pig out of sweets the night before.

My doctor told me to make sure that morning to eat lots of protein and avoid sugar. You don't want to load up on donuts and give a false read.

  • I wouldn't worry about "trying to pass", you really do need to know if you need to make changes.  However, my doctor suggested (as some of the other posters have) to avoid pigging out on pizza and ice cream the night before.  I think the logic here is to avoid falsely failing.  I have a co-worker who did a test and was told that what was eaten the day before did slightly affect the numbers.  So don't go overboard trying to eat differently for one day, in either direction.

I don't know why, but I think the fasting thing is different from one practice to another.  I read in many places that you didn't need to fast for this test, but then my doc told me not to eat after midnight and go first thing in the morning (essentially an 8 - 10 hour fast).

I go for mine at the end of this week and am terrified of failing too.  I eat pretty well most days (little to no sweets, lots of dairy, fruits, veggies and whole grains), but I'm still worried that I'll have to go to a restrictive diet!  Good luck!

  • My doctor just gave me advice on how to not "falsely fail" the test as well. My appointment is at 2 so I'm supposed to avoid sweets that morning and at lunch.  Other than that I think you should just eat normally.

  • My doctor said there is nothing you can do to pass if you have GD. And she also said it really has very little to do with eating "right" or "wrong". Some women just stop processing sugar properly when pregnant, and that it is just something that happens. I would want to know if I fall into that caregory!

  • My appt is at 8 am. My Doctor advised not to eat after midnight. Is this odd?
  • My dr too told me not to eat before my apt which is at 10am bc it could cause a false reading.  They also told me if I do eat to not eat any fruit, pasta, sweets, ect bc they body breaks down those into sugar and if you are already full on any of those you body may not correctly break down the sugar from the drink and then your on to your 3hr test.
