did/does your internal exam hurt?!

Mine fricking brought tears to my eyes today.  It didn't help that it wasn't my doc either :(  This doc didn't even respond to the tears falling out of my eyes when I asked about my 80% effacement and dilation.

Anyway, just wondering if I'm a wimp (seriously don't think so b/c it hurt like hell!) or if I had a bad exam by a not so sensitive doc.

This was my first one and now I don't want to go back next week :(

My first one at 39 weeks did not hurt at all, there was just some pressure and I hardly spotted at all afterwards.  My next one at 40 weeks was way more uncomfortable, not so much painful, but way more pressure and I bled/spotted afterwards for almost 24 hours.  It was two different doctors, so I guess it depends on each doctor and how they do their exams.

  • It was a lot of pressure and it felt a little like the pain of a pap smear.  But, I didn't think it was that bad.  Nothing that would bring me to tears.  But, really.. my LO is down so low that walking hurts in my pelvic region.  Sex hurts.  Everything hurts down there to some extent.  Plus, he was going to sweep my membranes... so that could have been my extra discomfort.

  • I have had quite a few cervical checks during my pg and they were all pretty painful until my 37 and 38 week checks. Today's didn't hurt at all for some reason (I swear I'm not complaining!) but I don't know why.

  • They seem to hurt a little more each week for me.

  • I'm not sure I know exactly what an interal is.  For my last two appointments, I've had to get undressed, and there was an experience similar to a pap smear.  This last time, she reached in and said I was not dilated at all, but there was no pain, no spotting, nothing like that.  Is that an internal?
  • I had a painful one at 37 followed by a not so painful one at 39, followed by an excruciating check a day after the last. I was having contractions when the checked me the last time. It hurt a lot.

    THIS

The first few times, I wasn't dialated at all, and there was no discomfort.  Each one has progressively gotten worse since I started making progress (2 cm and 50% effaced at today's appointment).  Todays was HORRIBLE ... I am not looking forward to next week's check.

  • They didn't hurt at all with my first child.

I just had my first one with this baby and OWWWW!  I was almost in tears and the doc couldn't get to where she needed to get, so she just stopped since there was really no reason to check this early.

I am so dreading my next one.

  • I'd define it more as pressure. Not unlike a pap smear. I was expecting a lot worse.

  • I've only had one, and I thought it didn't hurt at all.  I think I'm getting another one tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

  • I wouldn't say that it hurt, but it was very uncomfortable. My Dr apologized while he was doing it so it made me feel a little better that he was aware that it was uncomfortable.

  • It was uncomfortable, but not painful for me, even today when my OB tried unsuccessfully to strip my membranes it wasn't painful.

They palpate my ovaries when I have an annual exam (internally and externally at the same time) THAT hurts.

  • I've only had one and it wasn't painful. Just some pressure.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • YES!  I think it is mostly because I hadn't had sex in a really long time and combined with my kegels, it was just really tight down there.  What helped for me for future internals has been to take very deep breaths, almost yoga like, prior to and relax your body.  The more tense you are the more painful it is.  Good luck!

  • I absolutely love my doctor... but it was not exactly a picnic today for my first internal.  Not terrible pain, but it did hurt.  No bleeding/spotting (yet), but I'm not excited for next week's exam.... other than the fact that he does an US at every visit so I'll get to see LO again :)

  • I had my first at 36 weeks and it was fine.  I have declined any further checks until 39 weeks cause it won't do me any good to be obsessing about where I"m at.     I figure that one might hurt worse if I've had some progress.

  • I had an unplanned internal at 36 1/2 weeks.  They said they couldn't lubricate the speculum because they were looking for amniotic fluid/rupture of membranes.

    Owie.

Luckily my weekly appointments have not been so invasive.

  • I have had 2 and it only hurt the last time when he went "back in" because he thought he felt LOs butt and not her head.

I had not shown any progression at all, I don't know if that makes a difference. I go back tomorrow, I lost my MP so I know I am progressing... we will see if it hurts this time. Tongue Tied
