XP: What would you do? My DS swallowed a ball.

On Feb 25'th Jacob swallowed a smallish Koosh ball.  He's 2 1/2

The Dr. originally said to wait 5 days and see if it works it's way out. Day 5, no Koosh. I call and the Dr. says to wait 4 more days since my DS was eating less due to being sick. Day 9, no Koosh. Dr. says to wait until day 13.

Today was day 11 and I had my DH bring him to the Dr. Now Dr. is saying that it might have passed and we didn't see it. I would have seen it. My DH probably would have. I kept him home from daycare last week to monitor it. Dr. also said that it's not harming him since he is still able to poop, and doesn't have a fever and that I should just quit worrying about it. My DH agrees with this.

The Dr. did write an rx for an x-ray but said it might not even show up due to the material it's made out of. I hate the idea of a foreign ball stuck in him. I'm sure he has ate things that I don't know about, but I know about this one. I'm worried that it could have lead in it too. Am I over reacting? Would you just let it go since he doesn't seem to be suffering?

  • I would be worrying about it.  Do you see a pediatrician?  I would give it 2 more days if he says day 13 and then get the x-ray!

  • I'm with you- I'd be worrying. My doc constantly tells me 'not to worry about it'- but on a couple occasions I was right to worry (I'm still on the hunt for a new doc before #2 comes).  Anyway, I'm with PP- wait the 2 more days and then get an xray.

I would phone an x-ray clinic and ask them if a Koosh ball (I'd google what exactly the ball is made of) would show up on an x-ray. They will know better than your doctor about what exactly is possible to see. If they would be able to see it, I would do the x-ray.
  • My daughter swallowed a penny.  She was potty trained so I had to catch her poop  in a bag and check.  I have never been so happy to find a penny.  It took a week to come out, any longer and she would have been going in for an x-ray.  Can you contact the manufacturer to find out the lead content?  You can request a lead check.  It is a simple blood draw.  Good luck.  I would also want to know why he has not passed it.

  • I would get further testing..i mean what if the material the ball is made of expands or something...idk I am paranoid like that though!
