Alcohol and BFing

Ok, so I haven't had one sip of alcohol since finding out I was pregnant. I have desperately wanted a beer for sooo long!! I asked my dr about having one and she is against it. She said that I should pump and dump. That confuses me though because I don't know when to drink it and then to pump and dump! Plus I am afraid if I pump and dump I won't have any milk for DD when she is hungry. What are you ladies doing?

Re: Alcohol and BFing

  • i've had a glass of wine a few times now and feel as though it's all in the timing- our pedi pretty much confirmed that as well.  try and time it so that you have a glass/bottle of whatever shortly after you nurse lo.  motherhood is hard- enjoy!

  • I'm trying to figure this out too. DH and I are going on a date this weekend and I'm dying for a glass of wine. BFing is so confusing sometimes!

  • There is no need to pump and dump.

Alcohol metabolizes out of your breast milk like it does in your blood. The only reason you need to pump and dump would be because you need to pump while are you are drinking due to engorgement.

ETA: I will also have a beer right after BFing DS or right at the end of him BFing so there will be enough time between his next feeding and it being in my system. One beer isn't going to do any harm either way.

  • I will generally have the drink WHILE bf-ing or right after, then when it's time to nurse again it's out of my system.  Having the drink while nursing is a great way to relax and enjoy it, IMO.
