I'm quite curious as to why so many of you March Mamas are having inductions? It seems like almost 75% are having a scheduled induction. Because I'm hoping for a natural delivery, my OB and I wont' even discuss induction until I'm past 40 weeks and probably not even till after 41 weeks.
Like I said, no judgement here, just really curious as to the reason why.
Re: Inductions???
My ob will schedule one (hopefully) once i'm 41 weeks. I would really like to do a natural delivery but I left work on Tuesday to start my maternity leave, it was just to hard to keep working. But I won't be getting paid until she is actually born. So I really can't afford to wait 2-3 weeks for her to maybe come on her own. It may sound like a selfish reason but it is what it is. Plus at my 40 week appointment on Friday they will be doing an NST and doing another sono to see how she is doing and if they have any concerns i'm sure they will go ahead and take her. As far as other mama's i'm sure it just depends on their situation. Ex gd, high bp, large baby so and so on.
I hope I have a natural birth....
Im scheduled for the 23rd. 5 days before my due date. He is going to strip my membranes this thursday to see if I can go naturally. My LO has been measuring 4w5d ahead of schedule since my 12 week ultrasound. His circumfrence of his head is measured at over 42weeks right now and my doctor is pretty sure he wont fit...
If he doesnt think he will fit why is he waiting this long to induce? I dont get it..
OP, I was wondering the same thing. I am planning a natural birth and I definitely do not want to be induced... and it's scaring me to see all of these inductions on this board!
Thankfully my Dr. will let me go to 42 weeks before having to be induced. I personally wouldn't opt for an induction until 42 weeks (unless it's medically necessary).
I've been having BP issues so I'm a little worried that if it stays high, they will start talking induction. But so far I haven't had any other symptoms of pre-e so I'm hoping to stay healthy and be able to go into labor on my own!
OP- I agree with you. I know there are medical reasons too but it does seem a lot of people (not necessarily on here, I have been researching a lot too) just do it because they're tired of being pregnant.
In my research too, the majority end in a c-section. About 80%.

I am so sick of all of these induction posts. Medical reasons, great! Go for it. Be healthy and have a healthy baby.
Schedules, convenience, tired of being pregnant, etc. are crap excuses to me. To me, this is one thing you don't get to plan. And to not even give your body the time to do its thing make me sad.
I am even skeptical on the size of baby reason. So many people I know whose babies were measuring so big ended up being 8lbs or under! They can't judge size all that well.
I totally agree!!! I am very upset because I want to have a natural birth and at my last appt the Dr told me that at their practice they'll induce at 41 wks. So now I will have to fight the whole practice if I go past my due date. If there is something actually wrong, fine, but I have been completely healthy this whole pregnancy so that doesn't seem likely. Why would you just automatically induce at 41wks? Not only is the size of the baby just an estimate, but so is the due date! That's why they call it an ESTIMATED DUE DATE!
I'll be past 41 weeks when I get induced Thursday. Like other PPs, that's my practice's policy. Would I like to deliver on my own? Of course, but there's no good way to tell how long is too long without it becoming an emergent situation, and I'd rather be a planned induction at 41 weeks 2 days than an emergency c-section at 42 weeks.
But really ladies - whats with the judgment? No one is judging you for wanting to go natural. If someone's OB recommends inducing, it's usually not for a frivolous reason. They're the OB for a reason!
And to the PP that said 80% of inductions end in c-section - where did you hear that? Me, my mom, and MIL are all RNs in different areas of L&D/NICU/Post-partum and I would guess its a tiny percentage compared to what you posted.
First, let me say that I didn't realize that so many of us were planning natural births!!!
I am planning a natural birth too. My ob/mw practice will do two NST in my 41st week. If I pass both, I won't be induce until 42 weeks. Hopefully LO will come on his own because I really don't want to be induced.
Preeclampsia
I said in my research. I asked 5 of my friends who were induced and 4 were in labor for over 40 hours and then had to have a c-section because of the baby going in distress from all the pushing.... that's 80%. Good for you for not seeing that many in your areas but their experiences beg to differ.
I'm not judging because I want to be natural. I just don't want to be in labor for 2-3 days to end up with a c-section.
Also, read a bunch of the birth stories on this board, a lot were induced and quite a few had to have a c-sections... just sayin

Thanks for all the replies! I had a chat with my doctor today about this and she doesn't want me going over 42 weeks either. If I show no progress by 40 weeks, we will being to discuss induction as well for the health of little Sprout, regardless of my "natural childbirth wishes". I just want a healthy baby - even if that means throwing out my birth plan and all that.
BTW, I too was surprised at how many of us later March Mommas want natural child births. Here's hoping we can do it!
I will be induced at 40w4d if he doesn't come on his own which I'm completely fine with. I trust the doctors that have gone through years of school to know better then me. If a c-section happens then fine.. as long as he's healthy.
My induction was mainly for family history. I have 3 sisters and between them and my mother's 3 births, none of the 8 pregnancies between them went into labor naturally. Anyone that went over a week (all but one of my sisters) resulted in a LARGE baby and a complicated induction. I was hoping to do that, and based on my size, my dr didn't think I could deliver any larger than 9 lbs vaginally (he was estimated to be about 8.5-9 on his due date.
Turns out, I was induced 2 days after I was due (just like my sister's who went well) and it went great (just like my sister's, no need for pitocin). He ended up only being 7.5lbs...but all the drs, nurses, etc that have seen him are shocked by his light weight.. apparently he has the head, hands, and feet of a 9-10lb baby and a tiny body
I really, really don't want to be induced because of the possibility of failure to progress, more painful contractions, and increased chances of further intervention (yes, it increases chances of further intervention, including c-sec - this is not some newfangled hodgepodge meant to scare people away from inductions, this information is in studies everywhere).
That said, I don't think this is a debate about natural birth vs. medicated birth and I don't know how it got there. No one is judging anyone - OP was just curious. While I think that a lot of doctors are quick to okay inductions, most inductions are due to medical issues with either mom or baby - not people just scheduling them because they feel like getting their babies out.
I plan to have an epi. But I don't want to be induced. Thankfully, despite my BP fluctuations, protein in urine, and baby consistently measuring 2-3 weeks large as per growth ultrasounds, my OB has not even mentioned inducing. If I have to go there, I have to go there and will trust her judgment. I'm just hoping to go into labor naturally instead - a hope that I have to assume most moms-to-be share.
I'm being induced Thursday (39w 1d). I have a blood clotting disorder that requires me to be on blood thinners while I'm pregnant. They want me off my blood thinners 24 hours prior to labor and definatley didn't want me to go past my due date.
