Graphic Designers/Creatives (NBR)

Hi, all. My printer died (was shocked in a storm) this weekend and now I need to buy a new one. I own a Design business, but I'm the only employee Smile. I work from home and would appreciate any recommendations. I currently have a HP all-in-one 6100 series. I still need to have one that does scanning, faxing, copying and printing, and I'm toying with the idea of a laser printer. Maybe one that can print a little larger format for bleeds?? Any ideas for me? TIA!

ETA: It would be great if it still fit on the shelf like my current printer; I have limited room in my office.

Re: Graphic Designers/Creatives (NBR)

  • Oh im not sure but i'd love to hear what others have to say. I work with a small company so our colour printer really only does proofs. At home i have a standard home office HP but i find the cost of ink kills me and i'd rather print through a local place so i'll be keeping an eye on this thread =)

  • I don't have an all in one, but I use a Xerox Phaser printer, which is a color laser printer. I've used many Xeroxes over the years, they are great! You can check the Xerox website to compare models for what you want.

  • Best Laser printers for the price are Brother printers. I've worked in graphic design for a while now. Almost all companies I've worked for use Brother. They are also the most reliable.  Price on Brother printers are somewhere in the middle which is a great deal.

    Hope this helps!

P.S. Don't know current model numbers to recommend but definitely look into the brand :)

  • I just got an HP OfficeJet 7000 wide format inkjet printer for home and I love it! It prints up to 13 x 19, so perfect for bleeds.

We have a portable Canon scanner that was inexpensive and does a great job. I know this may not help much in your search for something that does all-in-one but I thought I'd throw that out there.

  • Thanks, ladies! I'll definitely check all these out. I normally just use mine for proofs, but as my business keeps growing, I might want to offer print services for small jobs.

And abegailanne, I always have to tell you that I love your Corgi! My mom's getting a new pup this spring and I can't wait to cuddle the crap out of it. Smile

Okay, so it doesn't fit your description of fitting on a shelf, but I think DH and I would both be drooling over this thing.  Him, for applications such as the one featured on the left (he's a graphic designer), me for those featured on the right.  Get me a copy of ArcGIS and Autodesk Map 3D while you are at it (former career as a map maker).

    Link for plotter.

I second this recommendation. I have a wide format HP (an older model) and agree it is great for bleeds.

That's funny, we just sold our plotter on Craigslist last summer. It was super-old though (think 1989) and we weren't able to use it or find supplies/software for it. Luckily, we got it for free from FIL. Yeah, if I had a nice plotter like PIP, all the walls in my house would be covered. Smile

Aww, thank you! You'll have to post a pic of your mom's new pup!

Good luck with finding the right printer!
