June 2011 Moms

any moms had/have iugr?

just got news that my friend has been told the baby has iugr.  (something something growth restriction).  i think she's between 36-37 weeks right now so if they have to induce, at least she's far enough along.  of course i read a bit about it online and the worst news is what stuck with me.  babies with iugr have a greater chance of having some difficulties or delays.  just wondering if anyone's experienced this and had a healthy baby.  tia for any info.

Re: any moms had/have iugr?

  • I haven't had it, but it sounds like intra-uterine growth restriction. I think that's when the uterus isn't growing properly and begins to restrict baby's growth. But I'm an accountant & could be totally off on this Stick out tongue  I have heard of it and don't believe it's terribly uncommon. I hope your friend's baby is fine; I'd guess she may just have to deliver early if the baby is severely restricted.

I didn't experience it personally, but my SIL did.  She was induced at 37 weeks and gave birth to a 3lb baby girl, (my niece), who stayed in the NICU for I think a week and half before coming home.  She's 11 months old now and I don't think she has any delays at all-I babysit her a few times a week and actually I'd say she's somewhat advanced for her age, especially with her physical skills.  She's not quite able to walk yet (and I'm not saying that's uncommon, my son was 12.5 months before he walked) but otherwise can keep up very well with my son.  She crawls right behind him when he runs around, and she loves playing with him.  Good luck to your friend-it's a scary time.

thanks for sharing. i  know she's scared but trying to stay calm so i didn't want to ask her a ton of ?s.  but of course, i wanted to know about babies who had it.

  • It can be caused by many things. One being cord/placenta problems, multiple gestation or high blood pressure/pre-e. Basically the baby gets a lack of things it needs to grow as it should and is in the lower 10th percentile on the growth charts.

Sometimes when the baby is too behind and can live outside of the womb they choose to get the baby out so that it can get nourishment. I guess the "developmental delays" would be if the baby came way too soon which could happen in any preemie birth.

I agree with all of this. DD1 was always measuring small and I was treated by a perinatologist for the last 10w of that pg due to threatened IUGR. They did induce me eventually, but things were fine and she ended up being 6lb, 7oz at 40w2d. They were worried that my placenta wasn't functioning properly anymore and that, therefore, maybe DD wasn't getting enough nutrients. She didn't end up having IUGR. Anyway, if your friend does have it, she's far enough along that her child should be fine. If they induce then baby will probably be in NICU for a little while to increase her weight, but I wouldn't anticipate major delays at this point.

  • My SIL also had this but they didn't really realize it until she was 39 weeks and she had to be induced and then wound up having an emergency CS.  Niece wasn't incredibly small but she has been falling off the bottom of the growth charts her entire life.  She's bright and hasn't had any type of developmental problems or delays though.

  • I found out I have IUGR yesterday.  They will be doing weekly visits from now on.  I am only 26 weeks:(  They said not to worry until it is time to worry (yeah, right)- and at the 28 week "milestone," they can be more certain about how our baby is developing.

Would love to hear about IUGR success stories, please, if you have been through this yourself.
