Speaking of food allergies

I am not sure this is an allergy or just a senstivity, but how fast do symptoms show up?  R's bottom and groin area was bright red about 40 min after dinner on Friday. (Prior diaper change was fine) We had whole wheat pasta for dinner ( different brand than usual) but other that that nothing had changed.  He can't eat cheerios as they cause a mild breakout on his face.  He can however eat waffles that are whole wheat, and wheat bread.  I got rid of the pasta just in case, but I am wondering how fast a food reaction comes on.

Thanks.

Re: Speaking of food allergies

  • Food is not going to digest in 40 minutes, so I would easily rule that out. Better to look to breakfast or day before dinner.

This is what I was thinking too.

  • I guess I didn't think about giving the food time to digest (duh).  Hmm..he didn't have anything new prior to that.  I will just have to keep track of what he eats for a bit to see if it happens again.

    Thanks!

  • Some food allergies and sensitivities show up immediately... does not require 40 minutes. It varies widely, from immediate to days after exposure. I have a food sensitivity that is immediate.

Allegies are an IgE mediated response. Sensitivities do not involve IgE. Both trigger mast cells to release chemical mediators. In very simple terms... those mediators are designed to attack bad things (parasites, bacteria). In people with allergies, their bodies send out chemical mediators to attack things that are not bad to most people. It often causes inflammation in the skin, seen as a rash, hives or blotchiness. It can be life threatening if the airways become inflammed. It can also be life threatening if the person goes into anaphylactic shock.

There are many causes of a rash. I would check with your pediatrician.
