M will not walk with assistance

Marlowe has been crawling since 7 months and started pulling up shortly therafter.  She cruises on the the furniture all the time, but when I get her to grab onto my fingers so I can help her walk, she just plops right down...EVERY SINGLE TIME!  She can stand on her own for about 30 seconds at a time so I'll sit far enough away to encourage her to take a step, but she just leans toward me so I have to catch her.

I don't really get concerned about too much, and I'm definitely not pushing her to walk.  Has anyone else's kid done this, or should I be concerned?

  • Owen never walked holding onto our fingers. He would cruise on furniture but refused to walk with us. He started walking on his own at 13 1/2 months and he went fast from there. 2 steps, 5 steps, 10 steps, gone... It is such a cute phase but also nerve wracking since they are falling constantly and you are just trying to prevent a head injury every 30 seconds. :)

  • definitely not anything to be concerned about.  Alec would never walk with assistance--he actually never crawled.  He would barely cruise, and decided to start walking at 16 months.  All kids are different. Aerin wanted to walk with assistance and took her first steps at her first birthday party.

  • Ditto pps.  Nothing to be concerned about.  Neither of my boys ever really walked with assistance as far as holding my hand.  Benjamin started walking at 16 1/2 months and Noah started walking at 16 months.
  • Ethan started pulling up and cruising at 7 months and our pedi told us that he'd be walking in no time.  He actually didn't start walking until he was 13 1/2 months old.  He just did everything in his own time and crawling and cruising worked well for him.  I think what Marlowe is doing sounds absolutely normal and before you know it, she'll be running around.

  • My DD never wants to walk when I hold her hands. But, I have a couple walking toys, that she takes off walking on. It doesn't worry me that she won't walk when I hold her hands. I don't think you should worry either.

  • Mia will refuse to walk with me if I help her.  As soon as I get near her, she plops down and insists I carry her.

  • Thanks so much for the feedback moms!  I'm always afraid that i'll be too laid back about something and then find out later I should've been concerned.  She definitely has her own mind about doing things and she's continuously progressing.  I'm in no hurry for her to grow up, this year has gone by too quickly!

  • Like everyone else, Derek wouldn't walk if we tried to help him. He would insist on being carried. He cruised around for a while and then just started walking at about 14 months.
