How can I make my girls name work with my last name???

So I absolutely LOVE the girls name Makenzie (we would most likely call her Kenzie as a nickname)- have loved in long before I met DH and always knew that's what I would wanted to name my DS...DH loves the name too, but the only problem is our last name is Mack. Is there any way I can make this name work- Makenzie Mack...my dad's 1st reaction was everyone would call her mack-mack or mack squared. I don't want to give her a name where kids will make fun of her, but I love the name. Was also thinking of calling her Kensington Mack and just calling her Kensie. Thoughts?

Re: How can I make my girls name work with my last name???

  • I like the name Makenzie, but I think it sounds too matchy with your last name.  I don't like Kensington.  It reminds me of brand name product.    Sorry I'm not much help.

  • I'm all for making names work, but I just don't think Mackenzie can.  I'm not a fan of Kenzington.  At all.

Why not just name her Kenzie?

  • I'm not a fan of Makenzie Mack or Kensington Mack. How about:

    Kenley Mack?
    Kennedy Mack?

  • I agree with PP, why not just Kenzie?

  • I think McKenzie Mack is cute, as long as you establish "Kenzie" (or even "Z") as a nickname early on, so kids don't think to call her mac-mack.

Remember that in events when her full name is used (birth announcement, graduation, etc) the first and last names will be broken up by the middle name.  So, it will be "McKenzie Caroline Mack" or whatever, which will sound a lot less matchy-matchy.

  • I like Kenzie, but if you name her Kenzie Mack, it would be like Makenzie reversed.  And that's a little odd.

I agree.  I think it is just a big weird.  DH and I vetoed a name only because it rhymed with our last name.

Our last name is Cook. We have had to veto all of my favorite boy names (Jack, Zach, Luke, Brock...). I had a friend who grew up wanting to name her son Landon, but then married a guy with the last name Nolan. Landon Nolan didn't work either.

I hate to tell you this, but you might have to find a new name. And I know that sucks... but on the bright side, McKenzie is becoming more and more popular right now. Take this chance to find a name that might not be as much of a "rising star". ;)

  • hmm, probably not much help, but i don't know that you can. without it sounding a little matchy match anyway. maybe if you went with kenzie and found a nice middle name to break it up a bit. i don't care for kensington either
  • MacKenzie (spelling this way because we like the nickname Mac) is in our top two girls names.  I kinda like the way Kenzie Mack sounds and looks. I don't think it is odd like PP, I think it is cute! And if that is what you were going to call her most of the time anyways, I say just go for it and name her Kenzie.

  • Don't do it OP!

My co-worker called her daughter McKenzie even though their last name was McKenna, and the poor kids name has everyone rolling their eyes or using it as a punchline.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to make Makenzie Mack work. You're right, the kids will call her Mack-mack. Even if everyone calls her Kenzie, there will be times that she will be called Makenzie (think every year in school at the beginning and anytime there is a sub). My name is Katelyn but almost exclusively go by Katie however it's no secret that my full name is Katelyn because I have to use it so often.

Kenzie by itself is cute for a little girl but I don't know if it will age well. I think you either have to throw out the name or use it as a middle name. I sympathize with you, my favorite boy name has always been Jack but our last name starts with a hard C and it just doesn't sound right.

    Sorry Sad

ETA: Kensington is really NMS but Kennedy could be shortened to Kenzie like pp said.

ITA with this. No offense, OP, but I don't think Kenzie is a name that would grow well as an adult. Kenley, Kennedy, Madeline, and Madison all are the same style.

I understand how you feel, I've had to veto several of my favorite girl names because they sound awful with our last name.

  • I went to school with a girl names Kensie. It wasn't short for anything, it was just her name. I think it's cute by it's self. That being said, I honestly don't think that Makenzie Mack is the worst name in the world, especially if you plan to call her Kenzie most of the time. If it's a name you absolutely love, and you think you would regret not using it, then I say go for it.
  • I think you dodged a bullet on this one.  I, personally, would thank your DH for having the last name Mack.  Mackenzie/McKenzie/Makenzie is the TRENDIEST most terrible surname-turned-first-name.

Surnames are masculine, and don't belong anywhere near girls.  Just pick something else.

And, as for Kenzie, think about this test:

"I'm pleased to introduce tonight's distinguished speaker, Dr. Kenzie Mack."

It just sounds like a bad joke, like, you named your daughter the pig latin version of Makenzie.

This. Or what about Kensey? I think that would be cute with your LN. What MN were you considering?

ETA: I really like Kennedy, too. A girl from my local board named her daughter this and I LOVE it.

  • I kind of agree with a lot of PP's....some names just won't work.

What about KELSEY? It has a similar sound, and is more resume friendly - and works with your last name?

  • I have a friend/acquaintance who just had a baby last Friday and they named her Kenzie Elyse.  My first reaction was that it was a cute name.  Go for it.  Chances are she'll get married anyway, so her last name will change (if she wants).  We're having a similar problem because our last name is Murphy and SOOO many girl names end in the "ee" sound (even mine).  I don't love the flow of that, so we picked names that don't rhyme.
