Big-Mouthed Toddlers

As promised I will begin PWing my 2nd time pregnancy questions now.

So I'm dying to talk to DS about being a big brother, having a baby here, all of that.  Unfortunately he's a really verbal 2 year old who is great at 'tattling.'  For example, he still talks about how mommy spilled her coffee and a nice man had to clean it up and that happened months ago!  And don't even ask about the time I fell down the stairs!  Since we're not telling yet I'm afraid if we make too big a deal out of it he'll blab but I also feel bad not telling him since he's such an integral part of our family.

Any experiences?  When did you start to talk to your toddler about the new baby?

Re: Big-Mouthed Toddlers

  • We waited to tell DD until my first u/s at 12wks because. She got to go with and we explained it to her then.  I still don't think she totally gets it just yet - but I'm sure that once my belly is larger and then the baby is here that she will!  I really wanted to wait telling her because I was so nervous going into this pg and wanted to make sure everything was on track before telling her.

  • we waited until we knew were were in the clear for less chances of miscarriage and when we were telling people.  We didn't think it was necessary to start before 12 weeks, and even then I think we could have waited even longer to start talking to him.

    Good luck.

I'd wait if you think he'll tell... which sounds like he may!! :)  Congrats by the way, I don't think I ever posted that when you announced!

  • We didn't tell ds until the end of 1st tri, shortly before we told everyone else.  I figured that gave us plenty of time, and (although he wasn't/isn't very verbal) avoided him pointing to my belly and saying baby at any awkward time.

  • Thanks ladies!  I think we'll do the same and wait a few more weeks.  I figured that was the best solution.  It's just hard not to talk to him about it since we're so excited.  I did have him 'tell DH,' and the rest of the weekend I was worried he was going to bust out, "I'm going to be a big brother," to someone else.
