Now before anyone sends me the links to the latest research on thickening bottles and nuitrition here me out. I am not doing this to get my child to STTN. She practically already does. But she is a refluxer. And since moving to Neocate for MPSI her reflux and particularly her nighttime reflux stomach pain has returned after a month hiatus. We are back to the colicky symptoms. We used to thicken with Thick It but it is a corn additive and I have been instructed no corn, no wheat, etc. But this baby is so upset at night. It took 4.5 hours to get her down on Saturday and then 2 hours last night only to have her wake up an hour later. We have upped her meds to the max dosage for her age and weight. But I need to do something. I am exhausted, frustrated at the GI doc for various reasons, and I want my happy baby back.
So if you thickened with rice cereal, how did you do it? What level nipple did you use?
Re: Bottle Thickening
TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.
We never thickened the formula or had "reflux" issues (at least that were diagnosed) but at his 9 month appt when the nurse noticed he was still spitting up quite a bit mentioned this was not normal (how the heck was I supposed to know when this stopped??), I took it upon myself to change his formula. We tried the Enfamil A.R. (and the Target equivalent) and have only had a few episodes of spitting up since then. So .. like babyaustin said, it's worth a try if you are able to try it out. Sorry you are dealing with this
hang in there... we thickened Audrey's formula with a couple teaspoons of rice cereal from about 3 mo on...
We mixed all out bottles on demand for both babies... and if remember I put a little rice cereal in the bottom of audrey's, added some hot water to dissolve it and then added the formula and rest of the water. I know the large cut nipples were a disaster. I think we just bumped her up 1 level. and I tried it myself...
The Enfamil AR might be out. They believe she has a milk protein intolerance. Enfamil AR is a milk based formula. At this point I might try it and suffer the gastro distress over the screaming.
Beth--I will try the couple of teaspoons and see how we do. thank you!
one of my concerns with the Simply Thick is that it has citric acid which is something your really do not want to give to a child who is suffering from acid reflux. So I stayed away from it. I might just go back to the Thick It since a corn allergy has not been proven.
