2 year molars?

For some reason it didn't really occur to me that a toddler might have basically the same symptoms of teething that a baby might but lately Warner has been incessantly chewing on his sippy cups, spoons/forks, he's drooling a lot and constantly putting his hands over his ears and pushing on his jaws.

He hasn't complained of any actual pain, but (as I may have posted) he's been pretty tough to deal with lately.

So do you think this could be two year molars making their way up?

Putting my fingers in his mouth is risky business, but I tried feeling around for a nano-second last night when I was brushing his teeth and I didn't feel anything.

What did your LOs do when their molars were coming in?

Re: 2 year molars?

  • I never knew when DD #1 was teething - even as a baby she didn't get fevers,  "complain" or drool that much.  With DD #2 as a baby I could kind of tell - but she just had her 2 year appt. and the doc says no signs of the 2 yr. molars.  So I'm not sure if I'll know or not...

  • Sounds like it.  DS did most of his teething as a toddler (he didn't get is first teeth until 9.5 months old) and that's about what he was like.  He'd also hook his finger around his bottom gum and gnaw on it.

  • For us the gnawing on things would give it away.  Neither really complained of pain but Molly was certainly very fussy while teething.  If you are trying to see the molars wait for him to cry and then try and look in the mouth while they scream - for me that was the only way to get a good look since I was also never putting my fingers in there unless it was an emergency.
  • Another trick is the "upside down game" - we'll sit on the couch and while supporting DS, lean him backwards. He'll open his mouth wide and we get a good look.

  • DD has two in now and I think the others are moving in (btw, they are huge and explains why she was so crabby).

She started to drool, chew on the straws of her cups and chew her fingers. And, she was super crabby (especially at night). Motrin seemed to make her feel better.

  • DD got her molars around 18mo too

  • Sounds like they may be making an appearance.

We've been battling ear infections like crazy and are on the verge of ENT territory.  Well at the last ped visit she said that his ears were clear and pointed out that all 4 of DS's molars are coming in and that his touching of his ears was likely due to the new teeth.  I was a little shocked and asked if it was normal for two year molars to come in so early, but she said that the teeth timeline is real iffy.  Anyway now that I know what is going on I do notice that he is chewing on everything, toys, sippys, and he's drooly all over again!  Poor kid, so we've hit the motrin at night before bed and that has seemed to have helped at least a little.

    Hope Warner feels better. Smile

  • DS was doing the same things, and man, was he a bear to deal with until they all came in!

  • This could also explain the stinky poo... Whenever Nathan is cutting a tooth, the days leading up to it, his poo just is the worst EVER... like 5-6 a day and horribly rank.
