stomach issues

My LO is very fussy after eating. He seems to have terrible stomach issues because he had terrible spit ups after eating, frequent swallowing like he has stuff in his throat, congestion only when laying down, and has been really gassy. My pedi has recommended having him stay up 30 mins after eating, burping every 1/2 oz, smaller feeding portions, and raising his bassinet at one end while sleeping. He stated he wanted to try all of this. We have been doing all of this and he still becomes very fussy. He is still gaining weight, eats frequently, and has normal amounts of wet diapers. He is having trouble with constipation. So we have to give him 1 oz of apple juice in replace of 1 oz of the water in one morning feeding and one evening feeding.  With all that said.....I was thinking that if we switching from Similac Advanced to Similac Sensitive. The nurse from my pedi told me that switching formulas was not the answer but from what I'm reading on the internet is really helps with sensitive stomachs. Any thoughts???Or should I just call back to the pedi and make an appointment?

Re: stomach issues

  • it can't hurt to try the new formula. if it doesn't work then you didn't lose anything by doing so and if it does work then you solved the problem.

  • Have you tried mylicon? It works wonders for Noah. I give him a tiny bit before he nurses and he hasn't been too gassy lately.

  • If I were you I would switch to the Similac Sensitive, but that is me. We went through a lot of formula with my son before we found something that worked for him. Just remember that it takes 48-72 hours for the old formula to make its way out of thier systems so if you switch you need to stay of it for about a week to see if it helps. Tara is on Similac sensitive and she does great on it, the regular similac she could not keep down.

I also agree with the Mylicon, great stuff!

  • Our DD is on Similac Sensitive she was really gasy and fussy before changing to it.  She is still fussy and gasy on this formula and either mylicon or gentlecare gripe water.  So, I am thinking about changing to soy formula.  But I could tell a big difference when we changed from Similac Advanced to Similac Sensitive.  I don't think it could hurt to change the formula and see if it helps.
