So, I was hoping she just wouldn't be back and my non-confrontational self would get over it and hope that we had a better day with her another time. As I walk into the unit she is walking across and says very loudly "That baby is trying to kill me!" So I promptly respond, "Who? My baby?" "yes" "I better go give her a spanking" (see...I'm not that stuffy!) So I walk down to the babes' isolettes and peak in on DD and notice that her nasal cannula is not connected to the high flow humidified tubing. "oh my gosh!" I think to myself "well maybe they had turned her flow off over night and they're just blowing the humidification in her isolette and haven't taken off the cannula yet" Sats look fine and she is not in any distress, but I'm still feeling panicked. RN comes back over with, not kidding, BUBBLE WRAP on her arms. (she is older and I think she must take coumadin because her arms are pretty bruised) I ask about the flow and if she had a new order to D/C it and she says, "oh no, I JUST UNPLUGGED IT!!!" WHAT!? You unplugged my baby's oxygen then left if off to walk across the unit and f-ing bubble wrap your arms!?!?!?!
I no longer had any quams about asking the manager that she not be our nurse again. I don't care if it hurts her feelings and I feel slightly awkward seeing her around the unit. That is just plain unsafe nursing, and I WILL NOT be leaving my children in that person's hands. They can't speak for themselves and I'm sure this is not the first time that I'll have to feel uncomfortable to do what is in my child's best interest.
Wow. Is all I can even think about that lady. Never again. And if we HAVE to have her back for staffing, I'll be camped out right there ALL DAY LONG.
