What do you think of the name Astrid?

I just read this name in a magazine today. I can't decide if I like it. I do think it is unique and ethinic (very European) but classic.

Re: What do you think of the name Astrid?

  • I like it. It is definitely similar in style to a lot of my favorite girl names...but I am a "name shortener" (I often call my son Luke or Lukie) and I just can't get past that it shortens to "Ass".

ETA: An alternative that I LOVE is Ingrid. I wish it went w/ our ln.

  • It reminds me of the movie White Oleander with Michelle Pfeiffer. I'm not a fan. It's a little harsh to my ear. I also can't see any one escaping childhood with this name without being teased at least once.

  • I've known an Astrid since 7th grade and the nn A$$ has never come up. I think it's a beautiful name.

  • Hate it.  It reminds me of some show where someone was named this and they kept "A$$ turd" to make fun of the name.  Sorry I know that is very childish but I think of that show whenever I hear it.  I'm thinking it may have been The Office.

  • My inner Michael Scott can only think ass-turd when that name comes up.
  • I know a little girl named Astrid and nobody has ever called her A$$ or ASS Turd. When her parents want to call her something for short, they call her Trid.

  • I think its beautiful and very unique which I love.

Any adult who watches The Office will probably think of this.  I personally do not like it but to each their own.

  • I can't get on board with this one.  It sounds really snobbish to me.  I do like Aspen.

  • I can't get over that the first syllable is ass. It's actually my grandmother's name. She hated it and went by her middle name her entire life.
  • i love it but i too, can only think of assturd.

I adore this name.  It's my grandmother's name and I have always thought it was lovely.  I don't care what happened on one episode of "The Office," it's a fantastic name choice.

  • I love it. It's not something I'd use myself, but I have always admired and loved this name. It's just cool, ya know?! :)
  • There's a character in the movie "How To Train Your Dragon" named Astrid. She's a cute Viking girl that's kind of a bad*ss and wears a belt made of small skulls. That's my only association with the name, but it's a positive one lol.

I've never seen The Office, and still the only thing I think when I hear this name is ASS! (and now ass-turd). Please don't set your child up like that!
  • I knew an Astrid in college. It's a little too "harsh" sounding for my taste, if that makes sense. It's certainly a real name, though and I've heard much worse...LOL.
  • I love it. It's a Swedish name, and that's my background. But DH is stuck on The Office joke (ass_turd), and there's no getting around it for him (funny, I could).

  • I don't watch The Office, however there's also a character named Astrid on Fringe. Scientist/FBI agent and I think it's a neat, different but not "DIFFERENT?" name.

  • I am luke warm.

I had a very eccentric sorority sister with this name.  It gives the name somewhat of an edge in my mind.  There is just something about it that I don't love... maybe the sound?

  • I went to school with a girl named Astrid and she was a nice person, it's an interesting name, I always think of  Pippi Longstocking when I hear the name though because the author of those books is an Astrid.  (I LOVED Pippi books when I was little!!)

  • I absolutely love it. It's different, but not too out there.

Edit: It reminds me of Pippi Longstocking, White Oleander and How to Train Your Dragon. I hate the Office, so I've never seen the episode, and I wouldn't base my kid's name on a sitcom people likely won't be watching by the time she gets to school.

Well... I'm not too sure about this.  Seinfeld is no longer on, but I'd still never name a daughter Dolores because of it.  Whether one likes it or not, The Office is very popular and influences pop culture.  You have to be prepared for As$ turd comments.

To the OP, Astrid doesn't do much for me, but I don't hate it.  I do like that it is not popular.
