Bassinet necessary?

Are bassinets really necessary? I had bought a bassinet a few months ago off craigslist and today I found out that it was recalled in 2009. So I was wondering if they are really necessary or if the crib will be fine.

I think it depends if you want the baby to be in the room with you or not. We are keeping our baby in the room with us for the first 2 months or so so we need the co-sleeper we will be using. I am sure plenty of people begin with a crib.

for me, having a cradle/bassinet was nice. I split night time between the cradle and co-sleeping. My SIL used the pack n play in her room for a while. With all the night time feedings, (in my opinion) you'll want the baby in your room with you for the first few months.

There are affordable (not recalled) items out there...

Not necessary at all. I had one with DD because we didn't have her nursery together yet, so she slept in my room in the bassinet. I liked having her close for night time feedings and diaper changes, so we'll use the bassinet next to the bed again this time.

We're not doing one. We've got a single bed in the baby room and our bed is next door; I see no point in a bassinet.

I'm not getting a bassinet. We are going to use our pack and play in our room until they are big enough to sleep in their crib. Most people I talk to say that Bassinets are a waste of money

our issue with the crib is that it is in the other room and we wanted DD with us for the first 6 months (with DD2 as well). We had a bassinet the first time, but this time we are opting for the pack and play. It is nice to have the baby right next to you at night....because ALL moms get up 100 times a night to check if baby is still breathing. :-)

They are definitely not a necessity. Our plan is to have LO in her nursery on our first night home, we shall see how well that goes!

Ours is a bassinet/co-sleeper so it gets a lot of use in our house, but we could have done without it. DS barely ever slept in his crib since we are a co-sleeping family. He went from our bed to his twin bed.

We're using our PNP in our bedroom for the first few months. We're going to try hard to keep her in there, and not on the bed. But.... we'll see how that goes.

I agree. Bassinets are a waste of money, unless bought second hand, etc. we are using our Pack N Play for the first little while, and then moving to the crib. PNP will also be taken to grandparents house, lake, beach, etc this year.

I'm planning to breast feed so I wanted to have something that I could pull up to my side of the bed. We ended up going with a travel size pack & play since we travel a lot and our first trip with her will be when she's about 2 months old. I think it'll be perfect.

We had a bassinet for our first, and she hated it. She really wouldn't sleep anywhere except for on me for the first few months, so the bassinet just sat there collecting clothes.

I'm considering an Arm's Reach for this one because co-sleeping will be a lot harder with a toddler around who still wakes up once a night.

We have a Pack n Play as well that we can use if necessary. Although DH wants to have her in the room I would rather have her in the crib from the beginning. The nursery is right next to our room so that's why I think I will feel comfortable starting her in the crib. But I am a first time mom so what do I know? All this rationale will prob go out the window once I take her home lol.

We decided to get a PnP with a bassinet and to put it in our bedroom to start, but it definitely struck us as optional.

I prefer the idea of using the crib in the nursery from day one but we also have the guest bed in there for now and my mother will be here for the first two weeks after the birth. It makes more sense to have the baby with us than with her.

Also, although our bedroom is on the same floor as the nursery, that hallway will be way too long in the middle of the night if I have a c-section. And DH works graveyard so he won't be there to just go get the baby for me.

We will use the PnP in our room for the first few weeks. it seems more MM than to spend money on something that will only see a few weeks of use.
