Placenta Encapsulation

Is anyone thinking about having it done? I had such a rough post partum transition with DS that I'm really considering having it done this time. It just makes sense to take hormones made by my body before resorting to anti depressents or something like that. If you don't know anything about it check out https://www.placentabenefits.info/index.asp (no clicky on mac)

It's basically turning your placenta into pills to be taken post partum. It seems very interesting and lots of people swear by it.

Re: Placenta Encapsulation

  • Personally...NMS. I can't stomach the thought of it. PPD runs in my family though--my mom had it really bad with me and my youngest sibling especially. She heard that Omega 3's can help ward that off, so she had me taking a TON of them for the 1st six weeks PP after DS was born, and I never had issues with it. I'll do the same this time around.

  • They won't let you have your placenta at our hospital.  They take it, put formalin on it, then send it to pathology.  Are you delivering at a hospital?  If so I would double check to make sure you can have it :)

  • To be honest, the thought of it turned my stomach at first. But the more that I have thought about it over the last few weeks, the more appealing it is. I've struggled with depression, and then PPD after I had my son. I'm willing to do just about anything not to ever have to end up on anti-depressants again. While I'm glad they exhist and they were very helpful to me when I needed them...they certainly have their downsides.

So, I'm looking into it, but thus so far don't know anyone in my area to prepare them.

Legally they can not keep it from you, it is your property. I have to sign a waiver saying they are not responsible for whatever I do with it. If you want yours all you have to say is that it is for spiritual reasons and if they need to test it to only cut off a small piece and not put any chemicals on the rest of it.

  • I've thought about it, but I'd want someone to do it for me.
  • Thats like caveman sh*t to me. Cats and Dogs eat that we are not cats n dogs. Just my opinion though. I honestly think it wouldn't do any better for your body than a One A Day vitamin wouldn't do.
  • There was a similar post about this on the Natural Birth board (click here)...someone posted a really good link for those that are interested...discussed cultures and had a instructions for encapsulating it yourself...among other things

Me on the otherhand, nope sorry...seems too cannibalistic to me...just call it like I see it... you're eating a part of yourself essentially, regardless of intent...other cultures have their beliefs, but that doesn't mean I'm going to follow them.... ewwwwwwwww factor x 100

  • i've been thinking about it.  Definately would want to find someone else to do it though.  Wonder how much that would cost???  I have a history of depression issues, this is our first so I'm concerned about PPD.

  • I wanted to do it with my last, but my dr told me the hospital  wouldn't let me take it. This time I'll be calling the hospital myself to see if I can take it.  I will be paying someone else to make them, I would not be able to do it myself.

I had really bad PPD with my first and it was much better with my second, but I have had a harder pregnancy so far and I don't want to chance anything. I have a friend who had really bad PPD and did this and had really good results with it.

I will say that I thought it was disgusting when I first heard about it, but when you've survived really bad PPD your willing to try just about anything.

The placenta is made into a power and put into capsules to be taken like pills, so it's not like you're eating it like a steak with sauteed onions. And wouldn't breast feeding be considered cannibalistic too then?

Well, actually if you look at the link that was in my post and then go to the link from the other poster (which is what I was talking about) there is actually a recipe for using a "just birthed" placenta--makes it into a smoothie... obviously that's not what this OP was talking about, but ground up in a pill, or blended in a smoothie (IMHO, the smoothie is definately more gross out factor than the pills), it's essentially the same thing no matter what form you eat it in (some people eat their steaks rare, some eat them well done, doesn't change the fact that it is still a steak...)

And no breast feeding isn't cannibalistic--that's a silly comparison...lol...milk is obviously not flesh...

cannibalism ['k?n?b??l?z?m] n 1. the act of eating human flesh or the flesh of one's own kind

sorry, but placenta definately falls into the fleshy category...

AGAIN, let me state: THIS DOES NOT MEAN I THINK OTHER PEOPLE CANT/SHOULDNT DO IT....this is just my own personal opinion...and it's definately not for me....lol---I can just imagine my MIL finding it now (she's nosy): OMG what is this?!

ETA: Here is the direct link (This has both the encapsulation and the smoothie directions).... I figure it was easier to just go straight to the website instead of making everyone look through the other post for it... :]
