Adoption

*sigh* Celebrity adoption myths

Emily Proctor (from CSI Miami) just had a baby in December, and she's featured in this week's Parade magazine. She was adopted as a baby, and considered adoption as she underwent IUI and IVF "but it takes a long time". So instead they're going to adopt an older child when their daughter is 1 or 2. Someone hasn't heard about birth order and adoption.

  • I read that this morning too. Nothing surprises me anymore. ::shrugs::

  • Birth order isn't always important. We adopted a 10 year old when our bioson was 8...

  • I worked in foster/adopt for years and we never recommended that a family only foster or adopt in birth order.  Some did, some didn't.

My cousin did adopt in birth order.  She had 2 bio sons and adopted 4 daughters whose ages were between the boys (3 of the girls were bio sibs and the 4th was the best friend of one of the other girls).  Three of those 4 adoptions fell to pieces, they weren't overturned but were by no means successful.  I don't have the room or time to completely explain everything that took place.

  • I was just happy to see a celeb that is actually open and up front about thier jounrey to build a family, no matter if it's fertility treatments or adoption it's nice to hear that celebs deal with that stuff too, and not just all of them have twins on accident at 45 years old.

Birth order is important to me and DH, and adopting an older child would not be something we would want to do- but some people don't care about it- I think if you are aware of the challanges it can create it's great they are willing to adopt an older child, they are not always the easiest to place.

  • I don't think DrL was upset that they were thinking of adopting out of birth order, just that she was perpetuating adoption myths, such as "it takes a long time".

    Really?

I mean my take away was that was what she was upset about...Huh?

To me at least this celebrity is pretty far away from adopting. There is a lot of time to learn and for ideas to change. Personally since I've first posted on this board I've looked into about every kind of adoption available...and asked about each one--the same could be true for this person--maybe the interviewer asked and she just answered where she is at now. ::Shrugs:: we can't all be experts...

  • I wasn't upset about anything. Just so you know ;)

Haha, touche'.  Care to elaborate on your thoughts then?

I tried to earlier, but it was chaos at my house.

I think the pp hit the nail on the head when she said that Emily Proctor answered at the point she's at now in whatever exploration she made of the adoption process. I just find it unfortunate that, because she's a celebrity, people will read this and see her statements as gospel truth instead of someone who isn't necessarily well-informed on the topic of adoption. And will somehow consider her an expert because she was adopted 40+ years ago.

  • I think more people are "accepting" of adoption *because* so many celebrities are doing it. Its the "trendy" thing right now Confused. One thing I've heard is "Oh you're adopting like that Angelina Jolie lady" (from an older person mind you). Yeah, not so much like her, but close.
  • Ugh I hate the "it takes a long time" excuse. It certainly does not always take a long time. Similarly I hate the myth that agency adoption is the only "safe" way to go.
