Motivate Me to Lose Weight

I can not maintain the motivation to burn more energy than I consume.  Do you have the secret?  I am one of those people who is always looking for the "perfect" time to start (x weeks until X, the first of a month, on a sunday, etc), & then if I miss it or screw up, I have trouble jumping right back in.  Ten to fifteen pounds shouldn't be that hard to lose.  Help me see the light so I can just do it, damn it!

Re: Motivate Me to Lose Weight

  • I'm of no help because I'm in the same situation. I need motivation too. I did join a gym around the holidays, and was doing well, but I've slacked off the last 2 weeks. UGH! I have to get back on track.

I keep telling myself that summer is around the corner and no one wants to see my big fat body running around the beach after my kids..........

  • Same boat, except a lot more to lose.  Summer is around the corner and I don't want to be sweaty all the time.  Nice, right?

It's not working for me either! LOL! I tell myself this, but I'm pretty much tuning myself out.......

  • Join us!  Our Ripped in 30 group!

My issue is I don't have the time to work out.  These workouts are just 25 minutes.  The 30 Day Shred is the same.  I can do a 20 minute workout with a warm up and cool down.  You can squeeze that in anytime.  I feel really good after I do it.  I don't really need a shower, and I can do it at home.  I don't have to get all dressed up to go out.  My kids sometimes workout with me.  It is good motivation for them too.   They jump around and get exercise too.  Plus, if someone needs something I quick hit pause and then come right back to it.

If you don't want to do a video...just start walking outside.  Go for a 20 minute walk.  Just go out and do it!  You don't need a day or a time to start.  Just go out and do it today.  Swing your arms.  Take deep breaths.  Hold your tummy in tight.  Do it!!!!!

Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!
  • What about joining something like Weight Watchers where you have the motivation of a weekly weigh in?

I understand the lack of motivation to exercise so I have to just eat way less to compensate for the lack of exercise.

  • It's never not the right time. (Your body has no idea what day of the week it is)

A bad choice can always be followed by a better choice.  (Chocolate cake for breakfast isn't a deal breaker)

No one will do it for you.  (But it would be outstanding if someone would, lol)

I had/have to repeat those things to myself all.the.time.  After I had DS I held onto 10 extra pounds on top of 10 I still had from DD#1.   Not only did I feel like crap but my right knee really bothered me (I injured it back in jr. high).  I started doing Sparkpeople to keep myself in check and while it wasn't easy, I dropped 15 pounds and now I'm much more aware of portion sizes so it's easier to keep it off.

Plus, I just feel really good after a workout.  I could have slacked the rest of the day but getting that workout in made/makes me feel like I accomplished something good.  And when I have a slump, I just have to mentally yell at myself that enough is enough and my lazy a** WILL get on the treadmill today.   I weigh almost daily (and measure once a week) to keep myself in check because I don't like surprises on a scale:)

You can do it...it's better to start now than get to July and think "Yep, should have started back in March" (something I have said many times myself!)

    Good luck!!

  • Before I go to bed a night I plan what I am going to do the following day. In that list is always working out. I am a very goal oriented person and like lists, so I feel better when I get closer to my goals and cross something off the list. I work out 5 days a week. I do one day of yoga or pilates. I do 2 days of cardio and 2 days of weight training. Currently I am focused a lot my flexibility. I have certain poses in yoga that I want to be able to do better. Sometimes I focus on being able to squat a certain amount of weight or swim a certain distance under a certain time. I am competitive with myself. Just set a goal and go for it. I really like the program 100 hundred pushups. It really plays to my goal and task oriented self.

  • I heard about a program -- stickk.com -- on the radio.  It was developed at Yale; the idea basically is to have you declare a goal, set steps to achieve the goal, then to hold you accountable.  You can even set up an account that will donate money to a cause you do not like if you miss your goal (you appoint a "referee").  I guess they figured out that negative consequences are the best way to keep people on track.

  • My current motivation has been the Athleta catalog.  The models are so healthy and athletic looking, and their stuff is so cute.

It got me up off the couch and to the gym on a rainy, miserable Sunday afternoon

  • I am totaaly in the same boat. I really want to lose 20-25 lbs and have been waiting for the "perfect" day to start. DH and I just planned a vacation to Mexico for our anniversary in Aug. and this past Tues. I decided I had enough and had to start that day.

I started tracking everything I ate and my excercise on livestrong.com/myplate. You can calculate how much you would like to lose and it suggests a number a cals to consume each day. You enter what you eat, as well as the exercise you do, which gives you a total number of cals in/out at the end of the day.  Only six days in but I'm feeling better already knowing I'm on the right track, good luck!

  • For me, it's got to be a part of my schedule/routine.  I thrive on routine and when I make working out a part of my daily routine, I just stick to it.  If you aren't one of those types of people though, it would be harder.  But, that's what works for me.

  • Maybe this sounds stupid but while I'm getting dressed, I take a couple of minutes to really look at myself in the mirror and the places that I really want to pay attention to.  The utter disgust motivates me ;-)  haha!

I also started where I commited to myself to do at least 5-10 minutes a day.  Even if that means just doing some crunches, pushups, and/or squats.  Getting back into the routine is helping me to incorporate longer sessions when I can.  Like yesterday when DH took the kids on some errands, I did a 45 minute yoga routine that I found OnDemand on our cable.  I'm just slowly easing myself back in instead of making larger goals that I know I won't stick to.

  • Go SM GO!  How is that for motivation?

Honestly, burning more energy creates more energy.  It's amazing.  We are never as tired as we think.  And once you get into it it'll become habit and you'll need it.

Why don't you join the group that is doing the shred or whatever on here?  There's an accountability factor there...

My motivation to start Ripped in 30 is this: If I do not get a handle on my weight now, I will only get fatter from here on out.  It is uncommon to see a slender 40 year old, rare to see a slender 50 year old.  The fact is the time is NOW in my 30s to change my lifestyle and make good food and exercise a habit.  Otherwise I will join the millions of fat Americans spending their retirement managing their diabetes and heart conditions.

That is a really good point.

I am really considering joining you guys.

Thanks for all of the motivating replies!  I really wasn't expecting anything to help, but once again this board did.

  • I'll chime in with what motivates me personally. Maybe this will be similar to you. Or not. 1. I absolutely love the feeling post workout and the next day. Love sore muscles, feeling like I really sweated, and just using my body in an athletic sense. It feels so good. Frankly I am missing this right now and need to start the P90x program. I can't wait to be sore. (I know that is weird!) 2. I just had 2 cavities filled. A brand new one and an old one. Not pleasant at all. My sugar obsession caught up with me. I vowed to reduce my daily sugar intake to a specific amount and generally I have. My teeth somehow are my motivation and it works. You could feel the same way about teeth, cholesterol, heart disease, whatever. When your bad food choices legitimately start impacting health it changes things. 3. You're an example to your daughter. Let her see mama taking care of herself. This doesn't meant you have to be perfect. It means making mostly smart food choices and moving and exercising. Think of it all in big picture. When you start moving more, you will automatically feel better. And probably have more fun too. Incorporate it into your day with DD even I'd it's just a 30 min walk or a dance party in the living room. You will feel so good. Don't focus on the lbs. And don't worry about getting yourself on a system or something. My DH is the same way. He builds it up into this huge thing and can never keep up with his new regimine. He let's himself down and gets discouraged. One day at a time. Have fun!!

That was a good one.  The DD part was a good strategy ;)

  • I'm doing it for Lent.  Crazy. But I figured a 40 day start to eating right and working out everyday would kickstart me. I'm also not going to break this because it's Lent. However, I'm getting really sad thinking of how rough its going to be!  Just the first couple of weeks though. At least I keep telling myself that!

  • My DH and I keep eachother on track we hold eachother accountable. He makes sure I work out in the morning and I make sure he works out in the evenings as soon as he comes home from work. We also keep eachother on track with eatting healthy as well. If you have a group of girlfriends who are wanting to lose weight you can do it together. When I was working a group of girls joined Weight Watchers.
