Point me in the right direction

DH's company is moving him from Missouri to Texas. We thought it was Houston forever, so I researched and found a good area and found things for DD and I to do in Houston, and after I have myself convinced I am comfortable moving to Houston, they tell him Dallas!

So I think Dallas is pretty huge and I am trying to narrow down which area I should look to find a house. We would probably rent until we know for sure we will be staying there. DH will be traveling all over the city to major retail areas so, being close to his job is not huge deal. A good school district is important, safe area, close to shopping. (DH said I should look around the Galleria, because he went there once and it was nice)

So please point me to some areas to look, so I can start my new research :)

Thanks!

  • The Galleria Mall is very nice...but not so sure about school district..I honestly am not as familar with DISD.

You may want to look in some suburbs like Plano, Allen, Frisco or look further north in Dallas and look at private schooling.

    HTH!

  • If you're interested in good school districts, nice areas and more affordable houses, going North is a good option.  North of Dallas you have Plano, Frisco, Allen, Richardson, McKinney.  Plano and Frisco are more expensive areas then the others.  School districts are good in all.  If you go Richardson there are not-so-great areas, but Realtors are great about knowing good areas of where you're looking.

  • We live in Frisco and are very happy there. I actually teach in the Dallas school district, and the school I teach at is fantastic, but it is a magnet school, which means the kids have to meet certain test score requirements to go there. I wouldn't recommend the regular dallas schools.

The Galleria Mall is nice but the area around is not so nice.  I'm not sure about the schools but do know that area is in a bit of a transition.  Like the PP said North is nice.  Plano, Frisco or even Prosper is great.  I live in Prosper & our school are rated exemplary.  Some people think Prosper is too far north but now that the Dallas North Tollway is complete it is really easy to get to & there is zero traffic on that part of the tollway.  I can get to the Galleria in 20 minutes on the tollway.  Prosper still has the small town feel & they are planning on keeping it that way.  There are tons of new home builders & you can get a lot of house for the money, for example our house in Plano was going for $300,000 more than here in Prosper plus our house is on a 1/3 of an acre with no lot premium.  Good luck & welcome to the Dallas area!

  • Allen, Frisco, parts of Plano, and McKinney are nice and have good schools for the most part. They also are very nice places to live with lots to do around them and aren't very far of a drive into Dallas.
