2nd Trimester

It is not your news to tell... (somewhat long vent)

I'm a track coach but was put on restrictive duty at the end of indoor season when I was still in 1st tri.  Outdoor track began this week and I am head coach for this season.  Last year, we tried this co-head coach thing and it didn't work well because I think the other coach felt threatened to have a younger, female coach with him.  He would keep things from me and bought equipment without my knowledge along with making other decisions that I should have been involved in.

He quit on the 1st day of practice supposedly due to conflict with the athletic director but I think because he didn't want to step down as head coach and be my assistant.  There is even more to the story and his inappropriate behavior with the AD even though he was going to get head coach pay.  In the past, some students quit or wouldn't tryout again because of how he would treat the them.  I think I'm a pretty fair coach and I'm not a newbie to being a head coach (just at my current school).  To quit a few hours before practice was annoying to me but it hurt the athletes more than me.  I found a replacement coach by the next day and another one has expressed interest in coming on board so HA! to him.  People also didn't want to coach because of him.

What really annoyed me (and DH) is the convo I had with the runners yesterday.  I was the only coach that could actually demonstrate drills and I also would hurdle and high jump for the team but of course I can't do all of that now so I told the athletes at practice yesterday that I was pregnant.  Some of them already knew cause the a-hole coach had told them!!  This was during the 1st tri when the only reason he knew is because I couldn't go to practice.  I had also specifically told him that I wasn't telling the team.

I'm hoping to have a great team this year that will show him that he is replaceable and that they can be awesome without him.  And of course flaunt how fabulous of a coach I am!!  Thanks for letting me get this out.

  • Wow, that guy sounds like a huge douche bag.  Sounds like you're already on the right track to rub it in his face about how awesome you and your team will be without him, so don't let his ass-hattery get you down about spoiling your news.  GL to you and your team!

  • Awww that sucks someone else already spilled the beans - sorry. GL this track season! I'm a former track athlete myself, so I know it's going to be hard for you not to demonstrate. Be careful but coach hard!!

  • Thanks ladies and I'm going to stay safe.  They are already complaining about how hard I am and I said I run a different program than Coach Douche.  One of the kids said "I know...a better program."  That definetly made me smile.

I know exactly how you feel.  I had to tell my boss very early on in my pregnancy b/c of complications and eventually, missing work for awhile due to bed rest.  I explained to him that this is a high risk pregnancy and I do not want anyone else to know.  I asked that he keep this information to himself and just share it with anyone on NEED to know basis (like HR manager).  Well, I returned to work and a bunch of people in the office, including a new girl, knew about my pregnancy!  I was most upset because I wasn't ready to share the news with anyone until I was far along in the pregnancy.  So, I'm sorry you had to experience the same thing!  Good luck with your team!
