Parenting after 35

How many words did your 14 (or 15) mo old say?

We're seeing a new Pedi for the first time at our 15 month appointment in April and I just want to be prepared. Right now at 14 months (today!) Sydney only has a few words. I don't know if they all even count. Mama, Mom, Dada, Dad, PopPop, Grandmom (almost perfectly) and "more". She has said ball, moo, bye bye (more like ba ba), and hop (just this morning) but she only said those words a few times. And with lots of coaching. They aren't in her normal vocabulary. She understands EVERYTHING we say though. Even when the adults are speaking to each other. If my DH says something about being hungry to me, we will catch her rubbing her belly or smacking her lips like she is eating. Anyway.... Back to the question - how many words did your 14/15 mo old say? Sorry for no paragraphs. iPhone.

  • Margaux *still* says hardly anything, unless you count sign (and most doctors don't.)  At 15 months, I think all she had were some animal sounds, "dog," "hat," "cat," and "dat."

  • Ada had zero words at that age.

  • Oh-oh was (and still is) his only word and his speech therapist says that doesn't count as an official word!  Sydney is doing great if she already has a few words.

  • Yeah, we don't have that many words, so don't sweat it!   I'm not 100% sure what he's saying half the time, other than when he hollers MAMAMAMAMAMAMA.

  • up till a couple weeks ago, we were at Kitty Cat (iddy ad), Dada, Pop Pop (for a wiggles song), and an occasional Hi, Bye... but she's been talking nonstop lately and she now says, All Done, No No, What's that (wuh da), See This, (ee dis), Again, Shoe... Haven't heard her say HI or Bye in quite some time so I'm not sure if I can count those anymore. She also says the word Nice but not really- she makes a sound that's equivalent to the tone I use to say Niiiiice (when you pet the cat, pet them Niiiice) whenever she sees the cats.

My pedi said that he'd be looking for what she understands at her 15 month appt, more than what she says. Girl understand everything! I'm seriously amazed by her on a daily basis!

  • At 15 months M said about the same as Sydney - Mama, Dada, nana(banana), up, hi and bye on a regular basis and a handful of other stuff he'd say occasionally.
  • Finn probably said 3 at that age and just now started saying more words at 19 months. His pedi's have never been concerned in the least. He was only saying 5-7 words by his 18 month appointment and they still weren't even slightly concerned. :)

  • At 15 months R had about 25 words....at 18 months it jumped to 60+. She's super verbal and chatty but we had her evaluated around 9 months because she wasn't much of a mover (at all)...everything  balances out in time.

  • M is 16 mos and really doesn't say any words that you can understand.  She has at least 10 signs that she uses regularly, but doc said that does not count. He wants her to have 10 words by 18mos.  If not, he will refer her for early intervention.  She understands everything too- it cracks us up.   If one of us says "no" or "don't" in the middle of a sentence, she will start shaking her head no.  :)

  • Ellie has about 5 words right now, when she chooses to use them.  We had her 15 month appt last week and our pedi could have cared less (I actually got chided a bit because I asked about this at her 12 month appt too, and was comparing her to other kiddos, like Fiona who had lots of words by 12 and 15 months).  While she's had two ear infections, Allison said that wasn't enough to be concerned about hearing issues, plus she said Ellie's comprehension was beyond what they expect (she was pulling things out of the diaper bag and holding them up to either matching or related things on the mural in the room).  She also reminded me that in general, there's some brain development that doesn't happen until around 18 months, and once that happens, language makes a lot more sense to them.  Oh, Ellie also chatters all the time and carries on "conversations."
  • "we will catch her rubbing her belly or smacking her lips like she is eating"...That is so freakin cute! See she gets her point across.

Sienna is a HUGE talker. By 14 months I counted about 40 words. By 15 months I stopped counting. I couldn't keep up. She just flew with it. She is 19 months now & she says hundreds of words. I am not exagerating. She is actually up to 4 word sentences.

  • Fiona has been strong in vocabulary. She had about words at 15 months and strung two words together. but like Lisa said, I think 18 months is where the majority of children will have a vocabulary burst.
  • My pedi doesn't do 15 month appointments.  Am I the only one???

Hopefully by his 18 month we will have lots more to report because now I only hear baba and dada.  And I don't think he's associating them with anything either. However, I may have been hallucinating the other day, but I swear he was looking at our wedding picture and saying Mama Dada over and over again.

  • Gracie says 3 words that I can understand. She also really understands most things and will act upon them.

  • My pedi doesn't do a 15 mo appt either.  This is a really easy one to answer.  Jack said no words at 15 months.
