High-Risk Pregnancy

Choroid Plexus Cysts

Hi ladies!  I had my anatomy scan friday at 18w3d.  After the scan the doctor came in and told us they didn't get a good look at the 2nd main artery to the heart and that he had Choroid Plexus Cysts on his brain.  She immediately said not to worry that everything else on my ultrasound looked great and if they had gotten to see the artery they wouldn't even scan for the cysts again.

So, me the first time mom panicked.  I googled it as soon as I got home and read that it could be linked to Trisomy 18 (which is most of the time lethal)  and Down Syndrome.  Now I can't let myself not worry or be happy-go-lucky about my pregnancy.

Do you any of you have experience with this??  If so what advice can you give?

TIA

Re: Choroid Plexus Cysts

  • they are VERY common and often go away on their own. We has one at 19 1/2 weeks. Then had another full scan a week later because I have short cervix (found out at anatomy scan) and was just starting with a new peri. They didn't even mention it and said baby looked good. Then last week at 24 weeks I asked them to make sure it was not there anymore and they said there was nothing. Several girls here and on the June board had the exact same thing happen. I really was not worried at all since our numbers at the NT scan were really good and everything else measured well.

  • My niece had one also. She had markers for downs and Tri18. Howeevr the cyst went away and she is a NORMAL healthy kid who is 4.

  • Like the others said, these are very commonly seen today with the advancement of u/s technology.

Did you have the NT Scan done? Assuming your results were normal for the NT and there were no other markers found during your anatomy scan, then it will be fine :)

I have 2 friend's whose sons both had them at their 20 week u/s as well. Both of their boys are very, very healthy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either of them! Both of them requested a 3rd tri u/s to make sure they had resolved and/or shrunk and both of them found they had!

    GL!

  • CPC showed up on my anatomy scan. Doc said not too worry (how could you not?) because there weren't any other indications of abnormalities. In other words, all the 1st trimester screenings indicated very low risk #'s. I wasn't even recommended for the aminio and I'm 38 yrs old. By 24 weeks, the CPC had disappeared. More often than not, I hear positive outcomes with these occurances.HTH.

  • CPC's alone aren't anything to worry about, according to my doctor. And according to everything I've read, they're linked to Trisomy 18, but not Down's. Trisomy 18 would be extremely obvious on an ultrasound, according to my perinatologist. We had two markers for Trisomy 18 on our ultrasound and the doctor isn't even worried about it because of my good bloodwork numbers and the fact that trisomy 18 is so rare and almost always obvious on an ultrasound (clenches fists, major organ problems, etc.) Try not to worry!

  • My baby (due in 10 days) had a CPC on the 20 week scan. Like everyone else is saying on here, they are nothing to worry about if they're isolated. I flipped out of course and was very upset for a few weeks because I had never heard of them AT ALL until my 20 week appt. But, my NT and blood work came back with good numbers and both the doctor and genetics counselor told me the screenings I got were better indicators of a problem than a CPC. I know it's hard not to worry--I am the queen of worrying. Hang in there. GL.
  • Our little guy had bilateral CPCs at 18 weeks, and by 24 weeks they were gone.  Everything else on ultrasound was normal.  Our 1st trimester screening was all negative, and my ob felt there was no reason to worry.  She did not even offer an amnio because she felt that by themselves, CPCs mean nothing.  I did some research that also showed that "soft markers" like CPCs with no other abnormalities mean nothing.  Well now I have a perfectly normal 11 week old son!!  Of course I worried, it is hard not to, but please have faith that all is ok, because I am sure it is!  Good luck, and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!!!

  • I did the same thing as you and spend hours looking up info.  But, it will be okay- my doc said CPCs are anomalies, but "normal" anomalies.  They originally found four on our baby's brain at the 20w scan, shrunk at 22 weeks (good prognosis), and at 24 weeks only one left but barely there.  It should be gone the next scan.

For us, it meant more ultrasounds and more frequent, very thorough check ups (which we entirely appreciate).

    Hope this helps a bit.
