Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

tv in baby's room

We want to set up a small TV in our son's room (he will be 15 months old on the 14th of march.)  We like to play the music channels and he liked the noise in the background while he is playing. (I'm a HUGE advocate of no tv before bed or using it to get him to fall asleep, btw.)

Anyway, my in-laws gave us a 20-inch w/ a DVD player built in.  It's nice but just too big for his room.  We have a small flat screen 13 inch that I want to put in his armoire, but I don't know where the stand is.  (We had it mounted on the wall, but don't want to do that again.)  Anyone know where I can get a cheap base for the TV or another alternative ?

  • I'm just wondering, can you put a CD on instead? I would think the brightness of the TV could interfere with his sleeping.

  • Loading the player...
  • Why not a radio? We actually have an old Ipod set up to speakers and it plays white noise for DS. We've done it since he was a newborn.
  • I would not do it.  Use a cd player/mp3 player/radio instead!  He might not ask to watch shows right now, but as he gets older it could turn into an issue.  I wouldn't set yourself up for that battle.

  • I'm personally against having a TV in any child's room.  Although my aunt gave me a small TV with a built in DVD player when we moved to our new townhome a couple of months ago for DS's room.  While it is sitting in there on top of his dresser it is not plugged in and will not be used.  I'm all for the idea of a small boom box though.

I just have family who put TV's in their kid's rooms and while they dont fight when they are told to go to bed....they are up all night watching TV.  And while I realize your intentions are good (on the music channels)  I'd be afraid of what a TV in there could lead to.

  • This seems like a slippery slope to me. While you could control the TV viewing right now, eventually your LO will want it more and more. And it will be more challenging for you to curb it with it being in your LO's room.

Everybody needs to do whats best for them. I just anticipate this would turn into a battle at our house, so there will very likely never be a TV in her room, let alone this young.

  • I'm with everyone else.  We have a radio/iPod dock in each of the kids' rooms.  (The girls share a room so just two.)  We play lullabies for them when they're going to sleep and other fun music throughout the day in their rooms, downstairs and even in the car.  It's quick and easy to grab their iPod and move it to wherever I need it.  I even have a travel-sized small speaker for when we are away.  It's a small and easy part of their bedtimes routine that we can bring with us anywhere.

This. If you just want to play music, I suggest just going with an iPod.

  • I am with all the PP's.  We have a small (and kid proof) CD player in DS's room that we put all kinds of fun music in.  Lullabies for sleeping, toddler books on tape for background noise, and fun rock music for dance time.

I don't see the need for a TV if you just use it for music channels and background noise.

  • if you like the toddler tunes music channel on tv, you will like the toddler tunes station on pandora radio.  they same play the same songs.  if you have an iphone or smart phone, you can download the pandora app for free and then just plug into speakers.

you could also get an iPod touch & get the app that way.  It's like an iPhone, but not a phone.
