Big boy furniture

When you moved your child out of his/her crib into a bed, from where did you buy the furniture? Also, did you get a twin or full-size bed? Any suggestions on where to look other than Pottery Barn Kids and Land of Nod? Does IKEA have good kids furniture? We'll probably move Brady in a few months around the time he turns 2, so I thought we'd start looking around.

both boys have convertible cribs, so i can't help there. but they have full beds, not twin. I like that it converts to full because i feel like that will last them longer than a twin bed (assuming they don't beat it to death early)

I'd go to A Room of their own in Kennesaw. It used to be called the baby's room kennesaw, but they expanded and changed their name. It's in the same location near Town Center Mall.

We got Bailey the Cataline bed from PBK and I really like it. I love that you dont' have to have a box spring and that it sits lower to the ground. We plan to raise it some and put a tundle bed under it in another year or two.

We got his 2 cubed bookcases at target and have a few fabric cubes in the bookcase for toys, books etc. I decided not to spend to much on the rest of the furniture since he actually plays a lot in his room now. Later when he's older we'll get him a nice desk etc.

Hey Jennifer,

We ended up getting Rowan a daybed from West Elm. We liked the modern feel and the quality was good. I also liked that I would only have to worry about a toddler rail on one side too.

Their daybeds are pretty modern and not overly feminine like a lot of brands. It may not be what you're looking for, but I knew that it probably wouldn't be one that came to mind for "kids" furniture

When I moved my boys out of their crib, I moved them into a toddler bed. I bought the toddler bed at BRU and I got it on sale, with a coupon, for $70. When it was time to move Ethan to a full size bed, my dh made the frame. For now, he does not have a headboard but we are looking at buying or making something creative eventually.

We did twin so he has more room to play in his room.
We got his bed at The Dump. I wanted a trundle with storage as well as a book shelf headboard and they had one for like 1/2 the price of PBK. I almost ordered one on PBK and then went into the store to look at it. Expensive junk. It looked so cheap in person.

We got full size beds when we moved both kids. We got Caroline's whole set (bed, dresser, nightstand and bookcase) at All Kids Room Stuff in Alpharetta. For Ben we found a full size bed that matches the cherry nursery furniture that both kids used. We got his at Rooms to Go Kids at the Perimeter.

We haven't moved on to a "big girl room" yet. But we got some of Abigail's nursery furniture and our new glider from Room of Their Own in Kennesaw. They have some great stuff for big kids! And they couldn't be nicer over there. I highly recommend them.

DDs have IKEA cribs that convert to toddler beds so we haven't bought "real" furniture yet. However, they already have an Ikea dresser in their room and we just got a bookshelf from there too. I think they have good stuff for kids. We'll eventually move the girls to twin beds and likely look there, although I did see some bunk beds at Costco that could be two twins or bunked and that's likely the route we'll eventually take. I like that the Ikea stuff isn't terribly expensive so if they destroy it or the develop different taste as they grow older, it's not a huge deal.

I have been looking at the Young American collection. I think mix is my favorite. They sell it at A Room of Their Own. We are planning on getting a twin bed so he has extra room to play.

Gavin's bed came from Land of Nod. It was clearance and my mom got an awesome deal on it... like $150 or something. It's a twin size but VERY low to the ground. Plus, it had wooden slats so we didn't have to use a boxspring with it right off. We just put an IKEA mattress on it. It's low enough that if he fell out, he wouldn't get hurt at all. But he never fell out anyway. Eventually we plan to stack another IKEA mattress on top of it to make it more of a normal height and that way we also have a spare mattress for sleepovers or whatever. His dresser came from my parents house- used to be my brothers. It's in the closet so it didn't matter if it didn't match perfectly. We also have a small bookshelf from Target that used to be in his nursery and this shelf from IKEA to hold his toys- we have it turned on its side:

I'm not a big fan of spending a ton of money on baby/kids furniture b/c they are so rough on it. So I think IKEA is perfect for kids rooms and they have a lot of options.

I just gave Carter my old walnut furniture set (queen sleigh bed, dresser, 2 nightstands, armoire, and chest) and had the tops refinished so they looked like new.

For Ava: the crib converted to a full bed. It's a cherry color. She has a mix of stuff in there now. Two cherry nightstands that I had, a cherry armoire that i bought about 15 years ago, a cherry bookcase, and some of the cherry nursury furniture. I plan to eventually sell the nursury furniture and get her a real dresser. That's about all she needs. I'm also going to keep the glider/ottoman and either get it recovered or have slipcovers made to match her new room. Although none of the furniture in her room "matches", it's nearly all the same color cherry finish, so it works.

Brownlees has a great selection of kids furniture. It's in Lawrenceville, but worth the drive IMO. Great prices.

We did the ikea bunk beds that has one on the floor. I love it becuase it makes a good hide out/reading area once he gets bigger, but for now I don't have to worry about him falling off the bed. I also really like having the top bunk to change him now that I am pregnant. Getting in the floor or bending over while trying to get PJs on was getting hard.
