4 day food rule

When did you stop giving foods 4 days to wait for reactions? I've also heard 4 feedings of the food is adaquate too. I feel like at this rate he'll be 21 by the time we make it through a lot of foods. DH and I eat a large variety of foods and use lots of spices/ herbs. I feel like we'll never get around to having him eat the same as us, even though he's only just started finger foods anyway. I'm just wondering.

Re: 4 day food rule

  • Well I'll say this.  I paid a lot of attention to that rule with Jillian.  But not really at all with Hayden.

  • Honestly, we never did. We had a small diaper rash once and stopped all foods and did a reverse version to try to find out what was causing it - turns out it was just too many carrots. Stick out tongue
  • I didn't worry about it with Cooper.  WIth Ben I did for the first 3-4 months of eating, but then when he pretty much hadn't reacted to anything, I got more cavalier.

  • We only did the wait rule when it came to things we knew were allergies in our families. Like carrots, we gave them to him one day, a tiny amount and he broke out in a rash. The Dr said to wait a few months and try again...same thing happened. We are waiting until he is 2 to try them again.

This, and now we just give Sarah whatever is on our plate that she can chew.

Interesting!  I've never heard of a carrot allergy.   Sheesh you can have allergies to anything!  I know a girl who's allergic to RICE.

  • Umm... didn't really follow it.  Laurel pretty much got whatever I was making for us that didn't have nuts, honey, hot dogs, or whole grapes.

Have I mentioned that I love BLW?

I know weird right! My younger brother, niece and nephew all had reactions for a while. They did all grow out of it but it makes eating difficult sometimes.

  • I think I used the 1 or 2 day rule! :)

  • I tried not to introduce all the high allergen foods in one week.  Once they've had about 10 different things, you can usually let them have everything.  We've done everything but raw honey and strawberries since I am allergic.
  • At first I followed it very closely.  Now it's more like 3 days between foods, more or less.  DH and I have no food allergies, so I'm not too worried.  We've only done fruits and veggies at this point, though.
  • We never did it.

ETA: and ditto Mrs.Smith... but you all know how much we love BLW!

  • I never heard of that rule before!  I mean, I'd heard to try out small amounts of new foods and then wait awhile, but I didn't know it was 4 days.  So, not sure I ever followed it.  We're all good here so far.  :)

  • DH has SEVERE food allergies, and there were much worse when he was a baby.  To the point of his throat swelling up almost instantly so we have had to be really careful!!!  We have just started and things have been very slow.  Especially since DH is hesitant to start anything.  Every time I mention starting a new food, he says "lets wait a little bit".  I am starting to get impatient because DS loves to eat.  He gets so excited.  We can't even eat around him without feeding him as well.  I told DH that the Dr. said we need to be introducing things at a quicker pace (mostly true).  We shall see how it goes.

  • We were cautious at first, and now that things are going so well we aren't that careful at all.  We do watch foods that are high allergy, but K has been doing great with everything [except for some poop mishaps when she gets a little too much applesauce.....]  It was driving us crazy to go so slow, especially since we wanted to introduce more spices and flavors.
