Exercise Class Where Baby Is Welcomed?

I enjoy group exercise classes and would like something that LO can come with me to or be involved with, but not something that is as pricey as a gym membership. Do you have links to anything like this near Fairfax? So far, I've found water classes starting at 6 months and yoga that is nowhere near me. Oh, and to make this trickier--I am still recovering from extreme pelvic separation during pregnancy so it has to be something low-impact.

Am I right in thinking that it would not be ok at a county pool if I sat his carseat by the pool while I swam laps?

  • Try this link. I am not in NOVA so I dont know if it will help you at all:

And yes, I think you're correct that it would not be ok to leave him at the side of the pool while swimming.  On the other hand, if you had a YMCA or something that provided childcare while swimming...good luck!

  • Stroller Strides!!

It's a great work out and everyone brings their babies/kids. Basically, the workout is what you make of it...if you need to be more low-impact, you can walk instead of run (that's what I always did), and do less reps of each exercise. And because there's moms with babies, people are often opting out of individual exercises if they need to nurse or change a diaper. It's very laid back.

It looks like they do have some classes near Fairfax. I've only been to the ones in Arlington and Alexandria and they were really good. Other than the good exercise, it's a great way to meet other moms.

  • Ditto bh, check out stepandstroll.com. It's the same thing as Stroller Strides, just a different company. Great workout and you can really make it as easy or challenging as you want. I know they have done classes outside at Fairfax Corner, as well as inside at Fair Oaks Mall.

And no way would I leave the carseat by the pool while I swam, even if I was tempted. You never know if some wacko would try to run off with the baby! Plus I'm not sure I'd want my newborn breathing indoor pool air - I think it's hard enough to breathe as an adult.

  • I'm not sure what's offered in NOVA, but I just saw some Mommy/Baby and Mommy/Toddler classes listed in the MoCo Recreation catalog...
  • I'm not sure about the Y in your area but the Y in Bethesda has a childcare center where you can leave your child for up to 2 hours per day while you work out. They also have indoor and outdoor pools if you like swimming as well as a variety of group exercise classes. Once your kid gets older, you can sign them up for classes too. I just signed DD up for a swimming class. The Y is probably about the same cost as a regular gym membership but if you want to have work-out options longterm, it might be worth it.

  • I love mommy bootcamp. I think it's similar to a stroller strides, but owned by a local woman and not a franchise. I started when I was on maternity leave with DD and am still going strong over a year later, even while preggers w/ #2. Just tell them that your recovering and they'll show you modifications.

They have classes in Tysons, Chantilly and Dulles Town Center/Sterling area and I believe you can try three classes for free.

  • Dear Pixie,

Now would be an ideal time for someone to create a pull-behind-the-swimmer-carseat-floatation-device.
