2nd Trimester

movement vs gas?

I am 21 weeks and I don't think I have felt anything yet, but I am not sure.  My tummy has been really "rumbly" for several weeks due to gas/ digestion issues.  Is there anyway some of these "rumbles" have been movement?  This is our first so I am totally clueless!!!  Not to mention, I have had dozens of people ask me if I have felt anything yet and when I say no they look at me with that " oh no!" look.

TIA!

Re: movement vs gas?

  • I KNEW without a doubt that I was feeling movement. It felt like an internal muscle spasm. And it would change location. At 21 weeks I was already feeling rolls & kicks, and you TOTALLY know what those are. It really feels like someone nudging you with an elbow or something from inside. Its easier to feel if you placenta is to the back, vs in the front (therefore absorbing movement so you dont feel as much). Hope you really know it soon!

  • I know that lots of people describe early flutters as feeling like gas but for me it never did.  Gas feels TOTALLY different to me.  The only time I ever feel confused is when I feel "tightness" and I'm not sure if that is like BH or gas.

Have you had an U/S and been able to find out where your placenta is attached?  I know that can affect how soon and how strong you feel movement.  My flutters started at 15 1/2 weeks and by 21 I was getting nudges but my understanding is that everyone is totally different.  Don't stress.  I had a friend who didn't feel anything recognizable until about 25 weeks because of her placenta position.  I'm sure everything is good and you'll be able to feel those "for sure" movements soon!

i had fluttering early on and wasn't really sure if it was the baby.  then i had a different feeling closer to 18 weeks and wasn't sure what that was also.  at week 20, i had my first 'that's def. the baby'.  some of what you've been feeling may very well be the baby!

  • I have been feeling movement for about the last week and its unmistakingly different than gas bubbles. It catches me off-guard every time, and feels like a spider crawling across my belly or something walking in place in one spot on my stomach. It usually lasts only 5-10 seconds, but I normally feel a couple of these sensations back to back and then nothing for awhile. It's almost a tickling sensation that makes my stomach itch afterwards.

  • I started feeling movement at 15 weeks,my husband reminded me that real movement doesnt stink lol...I have alot of gas with my boys so thats one of the ways that I have distinguished between gas and actual movement.
