Babies: 9 - 12 Months

? flu shot

mady's pedi advised us on the flu shot.

she says it may be a good idea to protect her from the flu since its not the "common cold" that everyone thinks it is, for babies it is harder for them to fight it off.

have any of you given your dc this shot? she advised it comes with a booster that will be given to her on a seperate ocassion.

her vaccines are this saturday and i want to make sure i have my info straight.

thanks

  • Our dd didnt' get this shot yet, but she's getting it this Friday with the booster next month I believe.  The flu is hard on anyone, but it's especially hard on children under 5 and those over 50.  We have been strongly encouraged to get the vaccine as well so there's even less chance of the flu hitting our family.  We are getting our shots tomorrow (my dh and I work for the same company and they give them for free).

  • The first flu shot for your child is available at 6 months. Then you go back for a second shot one month later. The flu vaccine does not protect against all types of the flu, but they've created it to protect against what they predict will be the most severe strains.

There are few side affects: redness at the injection site, a small fever or runny nose. It can't get you or baby sick because it is not a live virus. It can lower your immune response for a few days, so if you were already fighting something off you may not be able to as well as without the shot.

We're giving Olivia hers at her 6 month appointment in a few weeks. I got mine a few weeks ago and DH is getting his today.
