Preemies

ugh! the things some people say.

So I had a dentist appointment today for my regular cleaning. The hygienist cleaning my teeth pointed out a cavity (they didn't do x-rays but she still saw it) my dentist told me to come in as soon as I had the baby and get it taken care of and get x-rays done to make sure I don't have more (I have an auto-immune disease which wreaks havoc on my teeth) So the hygienist was asking when I was due I told her that I was due it have a c-section April 14th but I would be lucky to make it that long. She's like I know you can never tell when these little ones will come. I then explained that I had yet to make it past even 34 weeks. Her response was wow that must be nice not having to go all the way to 40 weeks and be all uncomfortable. I really had to restrain myself and explain that my kids ended up in the NICU and that I'd rather be uncomfortable than go through that again. I think after that she felt bad for having said it b/c she got all red and said oh yeah that's no good. The proceeded to make my next cleaning appointment. Grrr. Some people just don't get it! Thanks for letting me vent.

  • i hear that all the time. sometimes i think people just aren't listening/thinking when they hear how early our little ones came. a lot of the time, even though people know DS was in the NICU, they seem to think he came at 35-36 weeks. i have to remind them it was 32w6d. to which they always respond, wow - that was really early. i'm sorry she was inconsiderate!

  • I was pregnant for almost 41 weeks and my son still ended up in the NICU! I hate the things that people say sometimes. Just yesterday someone was teasing me about how overprotective/germaphobic I am with LO and they said "We had my son at the mall when he was a week old" and I wanted to say "Yeah, well, thats kinda hard to do when your LO is hooked up to tubes and breathing machines in the NICU!"  Some people just have no filter!

  • With both pregnancies (more so with P than M) at work, people would say things to the effect of, "no way you're going to make it."  And "you're going to go anytime."

Some of it was BEFORE I was even 30 weeks because I looked so big I guess.  I wanted to just be like well, I hope not because her lungs are not developed.

I think someone even said something before I was 24 weeks & it took everything I had not to say the result of that would be a dead baby.

  • I have heard it so many times it is just so unbelievable sometimes even from the pregnant moms themselves. I went to a store once and one of the associates there was about 30 wks and she was saying she wish she could have the baby now and get it over with. I had to give her some facts about a preemie baby, when I got done there were tears in her eyes (and my preemie story is mild compared to some of you guys). She however swore she would not wish for that again and thanked me for the eye opener because she just didn't know, she just thought preemie babies were just smaller and that's all lol.
