POTTY TIME for boys ...

Talk to me please ....

What did mom's of boys use? or what are you going to use?
I purchased a regular floor pottty with a lid (that doubles as a stool) but then another mommy at Target told me to use the actual potty seat that fits over the  toilet seat.
Which do you think is better?
and if you have a girl, please chime in as well,  I'd love to hear all opinions.
Thanks!

Re: POTTY TIME for boys ...

  • I actually used both with my oldest. The floor potty with lid when he was just starting out and that potty as a stool with the seat that fit over the toilet seat once he was more confident and taller. I also did the cheerios in the potty for pee-pee aiming when he was using the actual toilet. I found it a pain to keep putting the seat on and off the "big" toilet so that was short-lived, but I had gotten a seat as a gift from a family member. You just have to do what works for you and your son. Don't stress about it so much. Good luck with the training. :-)

  • We had both. I used the portable one when Jason was just starting. I had it in our kitchen for 3 reasons.  1) he was a morning pooper and wanted to catch him at the right time. 2) I could still monitor him while he sat on the potty and read books etc. 3) I also chose this area of our house because it didn't have carpet and made clean up easy.

As he became more regular, we turned that potty over to become a stool for the real potty and just added a padded seat device to fit over the large bowl.

contrary to what others have said, my boy was easier than my girl to train. For me, the big difference was doing without the pull ups. I think it's important for them to feel wet undies and not like it. I highly recommend potty training in warmer weather where LOs can go almost nakey. Jason was completely trained at 27 months. Heather - not until 3 years.

  • Step stool and seat on top of a seat :)
  • We obviously just did this with Ellie and she's a girl not a boy BUT - I had a little floor potty for her that I got about a year ago and she would sit on it from time to time just as an introduction, mainly.  We also got a seat for the big potty that we used upstairs and she also sat on that before we really started any sort of actual potty training.

When we finally did get serious about potty training I brought the floor potty out into the kitchen/living room area so we would be able to get her onto it quickly. She actually had her first successful peeing in the potty events on the floor potty and then after that she just took herself into the bathroom to go on the big potty.  She was actually doing okay without the potty seat for peeing, but she has trouble keeping herself up on there when pooping and tends to lower her bottom into the water (yuck) so I got another potty seat for downstairs and we have 3 or 4 stools in various bathrooms so she can get on the potty and also wash her hands.  So she pretty much switched herself to the big potty on her own and I'm happy about it.

I will say while sitting on the little potty seats that fit over the regular toilet seat, she has a tendency to get more on the floor; I think it has to do with how she sits on it and the fact that her legs tend to poke straight out instead of hanging down.  I have been trying to help her sit on there correctly to avoid that and it is getting better, but something to watch out for with the little seats.

  • I had tried all kinds of potties and kids' toilet seats and nothing worked. When Jason was finally ready, he just started using regular toilet. When he needs to sit on it he sits on the edge of the regular toilet seat and holds on to it with both hands to support himself.
