Washington Babies

T&P's needed.

Today we had our meeting with Children's that went really well. Confirmed some of our thoughts and answered almost all the questions that we went in with.

We then went to UW for a followup ultrasound and meeting with the high risk OB. As of 2:30 this afternoon I am officially off work for the rest of the pregnancy. The OB said that I didn't have to be on bed rest but I wasn't allowed to do to many strenuous things and need to take it easy. The reason for all of this is that My amniotic fluid level was at 5.4cm and normal is between 8 and 22cm. Had I measured under 5cm I would have been put on hospital bed rest. I now get to go in for weekly monitoring and hopefully can keep this baby in until he is due.

  • I am praying for you!

To share my story, we were told two weeks before due date that my fluid was dangerously low and I'd be delivering that day.  We went up to the high risk clinic for another u/s, and they remeasured and got much better results.  The u/s tech explained to us that fluid measuring is very subjective.  They're not allowed to count pockets with cord in them, they can't see pockets covered by the baby and things move constantly.  Her advice was keep hydrated and relax.  I didn't have to deliver until a week later and during delivery things actually looked fine; I did have on the low side of fluid but K was never at risk.

So my advice is the same - hydrate, try to relax and be confident that there is no exact way to measure fluid and you may be better off than they initially thought.

  • Fluid measurements can definitely be off. But I'm glad you're off work and taking it easy. Cooper was born at 33w6d and although we did have to stay in the NICU for 19 days, nothing was wrong, he never needed breathing support. He just had to learn how to eat and breathe at the same time. ;) I tell you that just to let you know that you're far enough along that you don't need to be scared. Keep that baby in as long as possible of course. But you're in the home stretch. Hang in there!!
