surgery and breastfeeding

Hey all. It is looking like I will be having back surgery in a couple of weeks. I was wondering if anyone has been able to continue breastfeeding after having a surgery.

It is not a major surgery but I will be under general anethesia and having to stay in the hospital for a day. Plus I am sure I will need pain medicine for a few days and will be sore for a while.

Jackson is still EBF and he hates bottles. Even bottles of BM. The few times I have left him, he waits for me and then wants to nurse non stop. My poor MIL only got him to take an ounce in six hours and she is great with babies. We have been trying to get him to take bottles for about a month, trying once a day, with little success.

I am just babbling at this point but I am just worried. Even if I pump like crazy before and after I am afraid he wont eat well if I can't nurse him. And if he does take to the bottle will he want to nurse after a week of not nursing. Plus pumping and dumping is depressing, but I dont really want to wean because I like BF.

Any advice would be welcome. TIA

  • I had outpatient surgery when Emma was around 4 months old.  She had NEVER had a bottle before, but she got hungry enough and took a few for my mom while I was at the hospital.  The doctors knew I was nursing and so the pain meds they prescribed were the ones I came home from the hospital with after having her (percocet maybe?).  I'm sure some of it got into my breast milk, but it wasn't a big deal.  The anesthesiologist told me that I should pump and dump for the remainder of that day, but that by the time that I no longer felt the anesthesia, it was out of my milk as well.  Not sure how accurate that was, but I nursed her to sleep that night after my pumped milk ran out.  I was terrified about the whole experience, but it ended up being no big deal.  All that you can do is make sure that the baby has pumped milk offered to him - he won't starve himself if he gets hungry enough and there's no alternative.  We didn't have any issues at all with her switching back to the breast after the bottles.  Good luck!!
