I went to L&D tonight (baby wasn't moving much and wanted to be safe) and while I was there I talked with a nurse that had worked at another hospital as a lactation consultant.
My mother had a problem with milk production and was unable to nurse, so I was curious about things that could help me to breastfeed. The nurse that helped me in L&S mentioned that there was a supplement that is FDA approved that you can start taking BEFORE giving birth that helps to bring the milk down, and helps with the milk supply after the baby is born. BUT she wasn't allowed to actually give me the name of the product since she's not supposed to advertise or something like that.
Anyone have any clue what supplement she might be talking about?
Re: Breastmilk Supplement?
She was probably talking about domperidone - but I really wouldn't go there yet!
First of all, your mother's experience isn't an indicator of your own. And it may be that whatever her issues were, they were easily addressed. The vast majority of supply issues are actually pretty easily fixed by getting a proper latch, adjusting nursing patterns, etc. Only very rarely does a women truly have a supply problem that requires further intervention.
What I'd focus on is learning as much about nursing as you can. Kellymom.com is a great resource and I like the book So That's What They're For. Find the name of a board certified LC so that if you have trouble, you can get help right away.
While some nurses may know a lot about BFing, there are many more who don't know much or may even give you bad information. Not all medical professionals know what they should about nursing.

Oh I'm just trying to get my information together at this point, and looking at all angles. I'm hoping I won't have any problems with feeding on my own, but I like to be prepared.
I will definitely check out the website you gave me, thank-you so much!
