Who is investigating daycare options?

How is your search going? This is by far my biggest stressor right now but today we saw a wonderful place and I feel much better. Last Friday we looked at a place and I cried a little when we got home - it was like a child storage facility (at a whopping $360 a week). Messy, the providers were not interacting with the kids, no good security, the newborn section was just aweful. First impressions - I was petrified they'd all be like that.

The one we saw today was great - secure, more like a school, a very interactive learning philosophy - it is $376 a week but the $16 difference is negible for what you get.

Daycare around here is very expensive (I knew it was pricey but didn't realize how much) - we still have to look at more places - but it looks like the range is $350 to $380 for newborn (centers). I'm sure some in-home places may be a little less expensive but after that Texas story last week I'm not sure how I feel about exploring that option. The centers are 6:30 am to 6:30 pm - the one homecare provider I talked to seemed lovely, she won't meet with me until April, but she's $280 a week M-TH only and 8:00am to 4:30 so if you break her down per day it's comparible to the others. I told DH we could have adopted a 17 year old and sent him to the University of Maryland for what we'll pay in daycare, but the most important thing is finding a quality place with quality people. There are waiting lists that go until next October.

How is everyone else doing in their search?

Re: Who is investigating daycare options?

  • I'm on a wait list for October 2012. They don't take kids under 18 months, though. I put my name on because everyone at work raves about the center, and there was no cost to get on the waitlist.

I'm going to need something for May - October 2012, but I figure it can wait.

  • We have a good friend whose mom runs an in-home daycare for an unbelievable rate - $25 a day for newborns. We trust her very much and she even does hour of 6-6. What a blessing that was!

  • We registered LO about a month ago so he can start in the fall. I think I'm paying $620 a month, but he's only going M-F 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We already pay $750 a month for DD ... Not quite sure how we're going to pay for all of it!

I will say, I love the place we found for DS. I didn't start looking for daycare with DD until she was about 3 months old, and I cried, too! I didn't find anything I liked that offered part-time care, so we hired a nanny to come three days a week. Nannies have their pluses and minuses, and this time I wanted a daycare center. Found one close to DD's preschool and I really love it. Glad we got in!

  • Speak of the devil!  Lol, I was just perusing through child care options.  I think I found one place I like but am waiting to find out the costs.   DH usually works on the weekend and has 2 days off during the week (He also works 5am-1:30 pm so it's really not too bad).  Anyways, with only having the lo in daycare for 3 days a week while we both work full time, we are looking at only having to pay about 150 a week.  Most places here in Denver are charging between 200-300 a week depending on where you go (personally I don't need Cayden in some private school at 6 weeks old lol)

  • We just secured child care last night!!! I was surfing my local Bump board several months ago and someone had posted a CC rec, which happened to be 3 blocks from my house, so we went and checked it out...she's awesome! No, scratch that, she's beyond awesome. 1 woman, in home care, infants to 3 years, $280/week for infants, beautifully equipped facility (it's the whole first level of her house). I am ridiculously excited that we found her, love her and that I don't have to keep searching. I'm also a teacher and her rates for holding a spot for him over the summer are totally reasonable.

Gotta tell you, OP, you're right, rates in the MD/VA region are stupid high. The woman we are going with, her rates are right where I wanted them to be. You're also right in that a lot of centers end up being child-storage facilities, which is sad, and totally not what I wanted for this little guy.

  • I too live in MD (DC area) and I can't believe the prices and the waiting lists.  I would have applied for daycare before I even thought about trying to conceive.  The daycare we really would like LO to attend has an infant waiting list for 12-18 months, well she will not be an infant any longer :)  So not sure what we are going to do as of yet. There is another that has hours until 6 but we really need 6:30.

  • DH and I visited five nearby daycares the last couple of weeks... now we just have to shorten the list and decide on one.  DH also got a recommendation for another day care center from someone at work, so we might check that one out too, but I think we have some good ones to choose from so far.  Next step: check the budget and see how they fit.

We'll start day care in September when I go back to work.

  • I actually started Daycare shopping today and the daycare I want, which is actually at my place of work (I work at a university) I am number 14 on the list and they only take 6 infants at a time....sooo looks like I am going to have to do more shopping farther away from work.

I have seen the prices yet, quite frankly I am scared! I thought about hiring one or two elementary education majors at my university, but I don't know what is a reasonable offer for 20 hours a week.

Any thoughts on what to charge an in home nanny (I guess that is what you'd call it) in the Midwest?

  • we have 2 places that we are between. one is 225 and other is 280. we have time, we are doing a tour of the two next week.

  • The daycare that DH and I visited charged about that much for newborns, and it was SO great.  It's a really elaborate center.  There wasn't an option to send a newborn part-time though, so we ended up deciding on church preschool two mornings a week.  For 8:30 to 12:15, two mornings a week, we're paying $130 a month.  I went and toured the preschool this morning, and it was really nice.  I'm not looking forward to having to leave LO with anyone else, but at least I won't worry that she's in a "child storage facility."

  • We started our search about a month ago and all of the in-home daycares in our town have a 2 year waiting list.  It is sooo frustrating, but I think we may have found one that has an opening.  We called her a week or two ago and are awaiting a call back.  Also, DH's grandmother and mother are considering doing a day a week each so that will help us out.  I really hope we can find something soon because it is a very stressfull process! Good luck everyone!
