Did your LO not like kangaroo care?

LO does ok for about 5 min with kangaroo care then starts fussing alot. But swaddle and hold him he is very happy. I know kangaroo care is supposed to be good for them, but I dont want to do it if it stresses him out!

Re: Did your LO not like kangaroo care?

  • An initial thought: Maybe he is getting too cold? Our NICU brought us warm blankets to put over LO's back and around my chest while we were kangarooing. (Maybe you already to this, though.)

Some days my LO did really well with kangaroo care, making it the whole hour that they allowed per day. Other days once he got out of his isolette and settled on me (or dad), his sats would start dropping, etc. We thought that those days he must not have been able to handle the extra stimulation for whatever reason.

Unless your doctors say otherwise, I'd continue to try kangarooing, but follow your LO's cues. If he's not happy, cut it short that time, and hopefully he'll be happy the next. When LO did do well in kangarooing, it was the best feeling in the world!! Good luck.

  • Kevin did well with kangaroo the first time we tried it - I got to hold him for about an hour.  And that was the last time it went well.  But he loves being held while he's swaddled so that's what we do.  I figure whatever makes him happy is what is best for him.
  • With DS he loves kangaroo care and pefers it over being swaddled.

DD on the other hand we only got to hold once and she was swaddled but happy as a lark, so I am not sure how she will do with kangaroo care, but I do know she does not like to be touched otherwise most of the time. The Neo said that he will really encourage the kangaroo care with DD to try to help her adapt to sitmulation and make things easier for care times etc.

  • Thanks. I dont think he is too cold because he maintaind his temp for qn hour the first time we did it. But that was the only the only time he enjoyed it. Now he would just rather be swaddled. Which I guess is fine if he is happy.

  • Once Scarlette started having feeding issues, she hated Kangaroo care b/c she spent the whole time trying to get to my nipple and it frustrated her. I would swaddle her and then hold her where her head was resting on my chest, not near my breast. So her face was skin to skin but the rest of her wasn't. I think she just associated that position with breastfeeding and would get ticked :)
