We chose the Graco DuoGlider, a tandem (back-to-back) stroller, because I feel like it will fit best in most public places. We've only used it once so far but I liked it. It is a beast, though, and was not my first choice. But, I got it on clearance from BRU and couldn't pass it up. I knew from the start that I wanted a tandem because I've seen other moms with side-by-sides and they always take up tons of room in store aisles and such. Since I mostly use strollers for doing errands and going to the mall, that was important to me. But if I were using the stroller more for walks to the park where it wasn't such a big deal, I may have chosen a side-by-side because they tend to be easier to steer.

SBS. Most of them are only about 5 inches wider than a standard single stroller. They maneuver much easier and corner better in aisles at stores. I have a SBS and can steer it one-handed through a standard doorway while I hold the door open with my other hand. Piece of cake, and I haven't had many issues shopping in stores with it anywhere that I didn't have problems with my single stroller.
For instance, I had trouble getting between clothing racks in Gymboree and Carter's with just my single stroller, so I knew my double SBS wasn't going to be any different. However, I can also guarantee that a tandem stroller wouldn't be any better. With its added length it might have an even harder time turning those corners.
I also found that tandem strollers aren't wide enough to get a good grip
and leverage on the handle when making turns. When you push that much
weight in the front you want to be able to widen your hands to increase
steering (think: heavy shopping cart...where do you put your hands when
making turns?). For me the SBS far outweighed the tandem.
With a SBS, both kids have a view and they don't kick one another in the back. Mine allows them both to fully recline and have canopies independent of one another. With a tandem, the front child can only recline so far. With the Baby Jogger City Select tandem (stadium seating) both children can recline to a degree, but if they fall asleep sitting up it's pretty much impossible to recline them unless the seats are already positioned just-so.
I like my side by side Dream on me bought it off Amazon a few weeks ago. I have a front to back one and it is a beast and is not very maneuverable.
Here is the one I just ordered and it has been a big hit. We took it to Disneyland and loved it. I added cup trays to it (can buy them at Target or Walmart).
My one complaint is that it sometimes get stuck in door frames if the wheels are not facing the right direction so that is a pain. It does fit through single door but you have to have some momentum going.
Oh and it was only $78. I think for the price you just can't beat it.
You can also unlatch part of the hood to make it more movable to help block the sun from their eyes.

Re: Side by Side or back to back double stroller?
I love love love our Chicco Cortina Together tandem stroller. It fits in my tinyass Nissan Versa, down narrow aisles and turns on a dime
