Anyone else with placenta previa/low-lying placenta?

Apparently I have this issue.  My doctor's office called me last night.  I am sure I have seen other posts on this topic, but I am curious as to what others are experiencing.  I have been Googling, and Google is never my friend in cases like this.

WebMD and a few other sites give a list of those people who are at risk for it, and I meet none of those risk factors.  So obviously, it's completely random in my case, and I am sure in many others.

Anyone have it now?  Any experiences with it in a past pregnancy?

Re: Anyone else with placenta previa/low-lying placenta?

  • My doctor said mine was a little low (he did not use the term placenta previa or low-lying placenta). I'm not sure how low is too low or cause for great concern, though. At any rate, he was not worried about mine and said in most cases, the placenta will move up on its own as the baby grows. He will check it again in a few months to see and just told me that in the event it does not move up enough, I may have to have a c-section. I think it is not too uncommon for this to happen. My SIL had it with her first and it moved up on its own. I hope this helps. I know it is hard not to worry.

  • TMI warning

Mine is low and anterior according to the ultrasound tech. When I googled, a bunch of sites said that we should be put on pelvic rest.

Unfortunately, my man is really "in love" with me and despite my concerns, we've had sex maybe once a week. I thought my doc wouldv'e called me if there was something important.

Well, I saw him last night and I asked him about it. He said no penetration at all. It makes sense because I've felt a lot of pressure since the last time we had sex. I'm pretty peeved that he hadn't called me!

I have been so nervous about it. I feel bad for DH since I won't have another u/s until 32 wks to see if corrects itself. That's 10 wks of no sex for him.

To have my baby safe and healthy.... it's worth it.

Not TMI, I am kind of in the same position (oh, that line made me giggle).  My OB said to continue as normal (does she know normal is like everyday?  haha) until my u/s on Wednesday as long as there is no bleeding.  However, we last had sex the night before last and I have had a LOT of pressure since then.  Plus, once my husband heard it was likely they'd put me on pelvic rest, he's not going to even TRY.

She said I'd be getting an u/s at the hospital every 4 weeks unless it shows that it has moved up.

  • I was diagnosed with this at 8 weeks. I had a lot of very heavy bleeding pretty often, which tapered off around 16 weeks (i think. pg brain makes me forget details) I was getting u/s every 4 weeks to check on it, and at my 20 week u/s it had moved up all the way.

The bleeding and 3 months of no sex sucked, but I just kept telling myself that it *will* move eventually, its just the in-between time that sucks.?

That's definitely the best attitude.  I wonder why they didn't see mine sooner (like at the NT scan or any of the in-office scans)?

  • After our big ultrasound at 18 1/2 weeks, my doc diagnosed me with a low-lying placenta. I am going back in 6 weeks for another ultrasound to check it again and she said "we'll go from there."  She also said to watch for bleeding (not a good sign) and to take it easy (NO heavy lifting) and no penetration until the next ultrasound. The only risk she mentioned was that I may have to have a c-section if it doesn't shift out of the way.  Of course, once I got home, I googled it like crazy and became way more concerned. I did learn from the internet that a low-lying placenta doesn't even really count as placenta previa because it's not yet over the cervix at all..... it's just really close. So, I'm just praying that mine moves in the next 6 weeks!!  Hope everything turns out well for all of you ladies too!

  • I found out yesterday that I have a low lying placenta. The ultrasound tech noticed it right away and said that it would most likely move up by the time I'm due but it is something to watch. She said that as I stretch it will probably stretch up and out of the way. After about 30 more minutes of taking measurements and what not she said that even in that time my bladder had grown a bit and stretched me causing it to move a bit so she is relatively confident that it will stretch up and be far enough away from the cervix for me to deliver.

She also said that in most cases if it is close but not covering the cervix, the placenta will move out of the way enough, the uterus just needs to stretch more.

I will have mine checked again in 8 weeks. If it has moved I'm good, if not they keep checking.
  • mine was approx. 1mm away from my cervix at my 18 week ultrasound.  My MD was not concerned and told me not to worry either and that 90% of the time he sees it move in time for delivery.  I have a re-check in another 4 weeks and he said we will go from there.

They did not put me on any restrictions for this, but did say that if it didnt move then its an automatic c-section....he doesn't allow anyone to deliver vaginally if the placenta is within 2mm of the cervix, or if its a complete previa (obviously dont want to deliver kiddo through the placenta)

Again, he told me not to worry, so I am doing my best ;)

  • I was also diagnosed with placenta previa and put on pelvic rest.

I have asked everyone who may know, and I have heard it often moves up.

I REALLY do not want to have a c-section and was researching acupuncture as a possible theraphy.  Does that seem rediculous?

I don't think anything is ridiculous if it keeps your attitude positive.
