I need some help....my mom has been watching DS at home and had fully planned to watch him till he was 16mos and would go to the toddler room. However, she ended up having to have some knee surgery and now DS starts daycare on tuesday. DD started at 16 mos and it was an easy thing for us...she was already doing 1 nap, used a sippy and ate normal foods.
DS however is just beginning to make a transition to milk from formula. Still takes the bottle - just plays with the sippy. And we kinda just keep offering different foods during meal times - sometimes he is hungrier then others.
So my dilemma is what do i send in terms of food, how much? Do I send bottles with formula and sippys of milk? I just want to make sure he has enough to eat, especially for the days he decides to be picky....
And man I am having such a hard time with this...I know that he will be taken good care of and DD has had nothing but the best experiences at this school - I was just really hoping DS would start in the same class DD did as we just love those 2 teachers so much and I know they would have made this transition easy for me. I'm just not ready to turn my "baby" over to strangers - I don't have any exp with the teachers in this room...just all the other older rooms.
Re: If you have a 12mo baby that goes to daycare...
DD didn't fully transition off bottles until around 15 months or so and I still sent her to daycare with bottles at that age. So, if he still takes formula in a bottle, I would think that it's fine to send him with the bottles until he's ready to make the transition. You could also send him with a sippy cup and ask that they try that first but that if he doesn't drink much to give him the bottle.
As far as food goes, DD was also hit or miss at that age in terms of what she would eat. I would send a variety of things everyday in separate plastic containers and sometimes she would eat the stuff and sometimes not. I think I always sent yogurt, cheese and crackers, rice and veggies. I also put some non-perishables in her cubby like apple sauce, oatmeal, and cheerios in case she didn't eat what I packed.
I just went through a daycare transition for DD so I know how hard it is. No matter how much we tell ourselves "everything will be okay", it's still an emotional process. I hope he does well with the transition and that you come to like and trust the new teachers. All of DD's transitions from different rooms and now to this new daycare have always worked out better than I expected. I hope the same happens for you.
Oh thanks for the tip about leaving the non-perishables in the cubby - excellant that they would have something on hand in case he didn't want what I send that day!!!
Thanks for the advice!!
My DD is 13 months and in the process of transitioning from bottles to straw cups for milk. (She will only take water out of the sippy cups.) I leave a carton of whole milk at the beginning of the week and they give her as much as she wants with meals (since its not very much at this point.) I still give her first-thing-in-the-morning and before-bed bottles at home. To supplement her calcium, I always send yogurt for the morning and a cheese stick with lunch.
As far as naps, she is still taking 2 although occasionally she will refuse one. I just figure when she is more consistent with one I won't worry about it. Plus at that time, there may be an opportunity to move up to a toddler class where they only nap 1 time a day anyway.
With regards to food, I keep Cheerios, goldfish, fruit cups and the pureed veggie and fruit pouches for snacks in her cubby. The daycare provides lunch.
Good luck! I bet your LO will do better than you think! They always do!
