Baby Names

How would you spell the name...

pronounced "Hawk-en"?

My DH and I love the name, but I'm struggling with how to spell it as any way it will probably end up being mispronounced. Its a Scandinavian name and each country seems to have their own spelling too!

Swedish - H?kan (spelled Hakan though)

Norwegian - Haakon, Hakon

Other- Haaken

We could go with Hawkin or Hawken (like Hawkinson) but I'm leaning towards a more traditional spelling.

 Thoughts ladies?

    Or hocking.

ETA: Like hocking (selling) stolen goods out of the back of your car.

  • i would use the spelling that derived from the origin i was connected to.

if neither your child's father nor you are swedish (hakan) or norwegian (haakon), then i would go with haaken (a girl i went to high school with used that spelling for her son, so i'm sort of familiar with it).

  • The spelling, while I still do not like the name, Haaken makes more sense to me, personally. (Hey-ken)  Like Laken with an H. lol.

  • Are you Scandinavian? A very strong name like that would sound odd with a common American last name like "Smith" that's only why I ask. All I can think of is hock a loogie, sorry. I'd spell it however my nationality would. If you are just picking it because you like it, I'd go with your pronunciation example of Hawking. NMS at all.

  • Do not spell it Hawken PLEASE for the love of Pete. Spell it Haaken, I don't particularily care for it but its definetly not the worst.

I actually know some one named Hoaken (Ho-Ken) it reminds me of an asian name for some reason. IDK.
