3rd Trimester

Need Estimate on how big 29 weeks is to order dress.

Hi, I thought it best to ask you girls. and I realize this is only and estimate and opinion, i know everyone is different... but just need some frame of refrence.

Im only 6 weeks right now... and I have to order a bridesmaid dress for when I am 29 weeks. The dresss is kind of empire waisted...

Im a size 2 now...can anyone give me any estimate of how many sizes I should go up to be at 29 weeks?

Im also terrifed to order big and MC.... so do you think I should try to hold her off a little? she wants to order this week?

Please let me know any advice would be great.

  • I would try to hold off as long as I could. Its difficult to say what size you're going to be at 29 weeks because I think most women are in maternity sizes by then. At 6 weeks I was about a size 4, at 29 weeks I was probably about a medium in maternity clothes. If I had to buy a dress to fit my 29 week frame I probably would have ordered it in a size.... 8. But like I said.. its really really difficult to tell what size you're going to be.

Maybe even a size 10. I don't know, its difficult.

  • I know this is frustrating, but there really is no way to know. Even people with the exact same measurements will carry differently. Personally, my maternity clothes are still too big, and I'm due in two weeks. I can still wear many of my pre-pregnancy dresses, particularly those that are empire.

In bridal wear,I think I'd go up two sizes, knowing it can be altered down that much, or up a size, without much problem.

  • If you have to order it now, you'd probably be better off ordering it too big and having it taken in when the time comes, rather than ending up with it too small. You could also talk to the bride and see if she'd be cool with you trying to find one very similar to it, but made of a stretchy material or something.

  • Ask the dress store. They do this stuff all the time and probably know what size to order that particular dress. If that's not an option, and it's not tight at all, I would probably go up maybe 2 sizes just to account for your boobs getting bigger, they can always take it in. It's really hard to say, I've been the same size the whole pregnancy, I just have a huge belly to cover, so all my clothes have been my pre pg size, just in maternity.

  • Keep in mind that there is a big difference between maternity clothes and bigger non-maternity clothes. Depending on the style of the dress, you could end up with a dress that fits your belly but hangs off of your shoulders and chest. I think that would look sillier than you wearing a different dress than the other bride's maids.

    This.

Also, are all of the bridesmaids wearing the same dress or same color in different styles?  Maybe you can find a dress that is the same color that is actually a maternity dress so it will fit better.  Going up so many sizes might be more inconvenient that finding a dress the same color because you will definitely have to alter it.  I would google maternity formal dresses and see what you can find.  I found my wedding dress this way.

  • I was a bridesmaid in a wedding at 27 weeks and had to order my dress very early in the 1st trimester as well.

I am not as small as you to begin with (normally an 8/10), but I ordered my dress 2 sizes too big to accommodate my bump and to make sure the dress didn't get too short in the front (this was the recommendation of the sales person)

I ended up having to get A LOT taken in and if I would have known how my body would have been at 27 weeks would have only ordered 1 size up, but you never know how you will carry or what kind of weight gain you will have.

Ask the store you are ordering from what they recommend, but I would probably order 2 sizes up just to be safe.  They can always alter it down but it's pretty hard to let it out.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • I was a size 2 before becoming pregnant, and I have been taking my measurements periodically to see how much I have grown.  Right now at 34 weeks, my chest size is 4 inches larger than normal, my waist is 15 inches larger than normal, and my hips are 5 inches larger than normal.  At 29 weeks, I was obviously smaller than I am now, but not by a lot.  I am in a wedding this August, and we ordered the dresses before I was pregnant, so I ordered my normal size.  The dress is an empire waist, so the only part that is tighter on me now is the chest, but it actually does still fit right now (although thankfully I won't be wearing it until I'm 4 months post partum).
  • Everyone is different but I was a size two pre-pregnant and am now 29 weeks! I'm not sure about your height but I'm only 5 foot so there's no where for this baby to go except out.

A friend of the family died recently and just to see, I "tried" to put on a pre-pregnancy  and I could barely get it on my body much less do any form of zipping. It's not just your belly that gets bigger, your ribcage itself expands to make room, your hips widen and for me, my boobs have tripled in size.

I would hold off as long as possible! You say you don't want to order too big but lemme tell you, by 29 weeks if you have your dress and it's too small...it's not only depressing but it's much harder to make a dress bigger rather than smaller!

This. For my brothers wedding I had already ordered my dress but wasnt pregnant at the time. I got big fast since it was my 2nd and my boobs were huge. When it came in I went and tried it on it fit but obv the wedding was about 2 mo. away so I needed a bigger size. The lady helping me was great and I am pretty sure I went up 2 dress sizes. I didn't have to do any alterations!

  • I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but it isn't just your belly that might grow. Your boobs could be bigger, your rib cage could expand, your ass/hips could expand.

Its nearly impossible to figure out how your body is going to change. Everyone kept telling me that I would gain all over, due to my natural tendency to put on weight and genetics. They were wrong. I'm almost all belly, but my expanded rib cage has made many empire styled pre-pregnancy clothes impossible.

  • I would hold off for a while. There is no way to know how much weight you will gain either. I just tried on a cotton empire waist dress from Ann Taylor loft for my cousins wedding shower and it still fit ok, granted the material has some give. But another dress that fit this summer would have had to be one or two sizes bigger to button over my chest! So you could be as little as just 1 size up or maybe 2-3. I'd wait and then maybe order a 6 and they could take in if needed?
