Toenail clipping drama

I have never once clipped my kids skin, and DD never liked having her nails clipped as a baby, but then she was fine with it.  Now when I go to clip her toenails, she FLIPS out.  Fingernails are fine.. toenails is hysterical screaming.  She said she is scared so I don't know what to do.  I pretty much had to sit on her to do her toenails because she was kicking so hard.  It has been a few weeks so we are at the point where she really needs them clipped, or they are going to rub agianst other toes, her shoes, etc.

help!  I don't know what to do.. I offered her a reward of she let me even do just 1, I told her she would be in trouble if she kicks and screams.  I tried to sit her in front of her fave movie and ask her questions about the movie while I clip her nails, tried to give her a lollipop during clipping.. none of that worked.  She just kicked and screamed and cried.  I don't want to freak her out since she is apparently already scared.

  • Ugg...I'm no help to you but wanted you to know I feel your pain. My first two boys had no problems with nail cutting.  DS#3, however, cries and acts like I'm trying to cut his toes off.

DH has to hold him down while I clip his talons - he's all sweaty and red in the face by the time I'm finished.  =(  I'm hoping he gets over it eventually but I'm not hopeful that will come any time soon.

  • DD1 is great about her fingernails. Toenails are a big struggle, even though I've never nicked her. She pulls away and whines.

I offer one M&M per foot, but she only gets them afterwards, and only if she lets me do all of the toes on each.

  • My DD does much better when I allow her to pick which toe goes first.

  • DD went through a phase where no clipping of any kind was allowed. My goal was one nail a day, but would shoot for two. Sometimes I did it after she fell asleep, which worked fretty well to get the job done but did nothing to get her used to it. By the time I was done with all of them it was time to start over. Eventually she got used to it and now she's fine.
  • DD started to freak out about toenails (esp the pinky toe for some reason) around 3 yo. I tried all kinds of bribes & threats. What ended up working was calling it a pedicure & putting a very sheer pink polish on her toes if she let me clip them without a fight. Now a year later we still do "pedicures" about once a month but it has gotten a lot better.
  • My DD was fine with her finger nails but hated her toes done and wouldn't let me.  We went to the store and I let her pick out her own color of nail polish (limited to certain shades) and told her I would put the nail polish on her toes if I could cut her nails so they would look pretty.  Now she is fine with it, with or without polish.
  • I feel sorry for the people with boys; I can at least bribe Muffin with painting her toenails. She gets to pick whatever color she wants because its her toes. No paint *ever* for fingernails, because her Catholic school says no fingernail polish, even for 4k.
  • My daughter use to hate to have her fingernails or toenails clipped.  I would have to wrap my arms and legs around her and clip them that way.  It was horrible!  Finally last summer she thought it was cool to get nail polish on them.  So for awhile I had to bribe her with the polish to get her to let me clip them.  Now she is so much better at letting me clip them.

  • Another thing that worked well for us, is that TinkerBell left us some "no owie fairy dust" that we sprinkle on DD's fingernails and toenails before we clip them. (It's actually baking soda.) She will still fight and squirm with the toenails, but I'm able to do it without DH;s help.
