Food questions

How did you know when it was time to increase the number and size of your LO's meals? Everything I've read says to watch your baby's cues, but I feel like there should be some more guidelines out there. I make most of M's food, but I figure if he was eating jarred food, he'd be up to Stage 2 now, and most of those seem to be about 4 oz, so I make his food in 4 oz containers. He can definitely eat 4 oz at a time, and sometimes would eat more than that if I offered more. How do I know when to add a 3rd meal and/or increase the amount of food per meal? He's 7 months old and is currently eating 2 meals a day (lunch and dinner).

Also, how and when did you introduce meat?

Re: Food questions

  • We didn't do a whole lot of meat when DS was in the stage 2 phase, mainly because the jarred meats made me gag.  We did try a few of the "combination meals" in the jars, from Nature's Best I think, that were like chicken noodle, turkey dinner, etc.  But I don't remember of those were stage 2 or 3.

As for when to give him more, I would usually just offer more, and if he ate it, great.  If not, oh well.  And most often he was getting a bottle "with" his meals, so I'd give that to him once the food portion was done.  He was always a good eater, so he was also a chubby baby.  :-)

  • I started DD with 3 meals last week a couple of weeks ago at 8 mos. old.

While I've been increasing the size amount in the bowl she rarely finishes--her cues that she is done are looking around the room rather than at the spoon and not automatically opening her mouth when she sees the spoon coming.

My homemade food is also thicker and has less water than the stuff I buy, so I think she fills up more quickly on 4 oz. of homemade than 4 oz. of store bought.

I did introduce her to chicken last week and she loved it.  I baked it and then pureed it with some peas and carrots.

  • We feed him until he doesn't want any more.  I was doing 3 meals (breakfast & dinner plus a smaller "lunch"/snack) but one day I forgot to do it & he didn't seem to miss it (he definitely gets fussy around usual breakfast & dinner times, despite having a bottle just an hour or two before).  I figure I'll add in a lunch when his bottles, breakfast & dinner don't seem to be cutting it any longer.

What does M eat? I'm just curious b/c I'm running out of ideas of what to make Sprout!

We're just doing fruit and veggie purees right now, plus baby oatmeal. For lunch (which I send to daycare), I mix about 3 Tbsp of oatmeal with BM and about 2 oz of fruit puree. Fruits we've tried so far are apple, pears, bananas, peaches, apricots, and blueberries. Sometimes I'll just do a straight fruit puree or a combo (apple/peach, blueberry/banana, etc.). I have some frozen mango in my freezer, so that may be next.

Dinners are usually a straight veggie puree, although I mix some of his less favorite veggies with pureed apples. We've done butternut squash, sweet potatoes, carrots (mixed with apple), and green beans (mixed with apple). I tried pureeing some peas the other day, but I couldn't get it smooth enough, so I'm going to save them for when he can eat chunkier foods. I may do zucchini or yellow squash next.

Oh, apricots are a great idea!  I'll add that to the "to try" list. (yes, i'm anal & keep a list!)

re: peas. I assume you were using frozen?  I've found that they are easier to puree if you boil them hard for like 10 minutes or until they turn more of a dull green.  Then they puree nice & smooth.

Thanks for the tip! Yes, I was using frozen peas. They were still bright green when I tried to puree them, so maybe I didn't cook them long enough.
