HI - I will be delivering at Winthrop in January and I am wondering if anyone has any tips for me about the hospital. Things that are good, things to avoid, any info at all would be appreciated. Thanks!
Yes - Winthrop in Mineola. I have heard good things about the hospital, especially the NICU, but I haven't delivered there. Just wondering if anyone had any advice.
Congrats!!! Winthrop is GREAT!! I just delivered my baby girl Ella there on 10/29/10. I would def recommend doing a tour with them, I combined mine with lamaze classes. I requested my own room after delivery and it was SOO worth it~~no worries about other families, interuptions etc.. Just note there is an additional cost! The nurses are FASNTASTIC!!! they really make you feel so comfortable, from every aspect. The best part I would say is the Labor/Delivery room~~just sooo nice for you and your signficant other. They made our experience so great from A-Z~~anything else just ask!! Warm Wishes on a safe and amazing birth:)) it was my 1st and the most unreal moment of my entire life:)
Congratulations on Baby Ella. IThe first baby is always so exiciting. I love the name.
I am taking the tour of the hospital with my other children tomorrow afternoon. We are toying with the idea of getting my own room, but since I know I am having a c-section and will be in the hospital for about 5 days it is going to cost about $1,000 - that is a lot of money! We are thinking about it. I delivered at North Shore and LIJ the last two times and there were just so many people in the room in both places. I don't think I could take it. North Shore was ok, but LIJ was a true dump. I would never recommend someone deliver there.
I have heard only good things about Winthrop so I am looking forward to it. Thanks for responding to my post. Good Luck with Ella.
I live in Garden City and my doc is Dr. Hanauer (she is fantastic).
Dr. Hanauer is amazing! Winthrop is a wonderful hospital to delivery at. Nurses are all great, rooms are cozy, great nursery, great post-partum care.
I have a midwife, Melanie Sumersille, but Dr. Hanauer was the OB on call that would have performed my c-section if I was to need one. I was in labor for 40 hrs with no progress (3cm the entire time), and Dr. Hanauer and my midwife gave me another 2 hours to see what would happen and I went form 3-10 in an hour after that convo. Dr. Hanauer is all about her patient's needs on a personal basis as well as the nurses. You are in good hands at Winthrop!
i delivered my twins ella & luke at winthrop (05/04/10) and it was absolutely a wonderful experience! the staff is fabulous and so caring! i had a private room which was fantastic and i have NO complaints. i received the most beautiful hand knit blankets and hats for the babies, i think everyone does. make sure you fill your cart everyday, have your husband take stuff home for you. the extra blankets, bottles, diapers, nipples, etc. all come in handy. the staff was constantly packed my cart with stuff, i think bc i had multiples, but i know they will for you too! i still use the swaddle blankets that i was able to take, i never had to buy any!
good luck, you absolutely will have a great experience. they do give a mommy type class you can take before you leave. i was there for 5 days bc of c-section and i didnt want to leave! lol
So comforting to hear good things about Winthrop! I'll be delivering there around April 22nd, & I'm excited & terrified in one. It's my first, & I'm thrilled about having a baby, but I've been working on a phobia of needles & know it's going to test my efforts.
Anyone use Dr. Kastner? She's my doc and was just wondering how she (or the other docs in her practice) are in the hospital setting.
I don't have any tips, but I also had a great experience at Winthrop. To echo other posts, the nursing staff is AWESOME. My baby was in NICU for a few days and I was a bit of a basket case in the days following her birth. They were so comforting and understanding, and it was reassuring to know she was in good hands if I was not with her. Best of luck; I hope your experience is as good as mine was.
Hi Everyone - I started this thread so I thought I would circle back and let everyone know how my experience went. I had a scheduled c-section which went well. It was a odd experience for me since I had always gone into labor with the other two babies. I have always ended up with a c-section, but it wasn't scheduled. The staff in pre-op was wonderful. Very caring, very coordinated and very calm. You felt like you were in very good hands. I delivered at North Shore Manhasset and then LIJ with the other two babies. This was a far better experience. I was even able to nurse my baby (Trevor) while I was in recovery. The other hospitals always had the babies in the nursery before I was out of surgery. This time I was able to stay with the baby the whole time. It was very nice and very moving.
I was in the hospital for 5 days and I was so happy with every nurse that I had. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable and worked really well together. The whole spirit of the maternity ward was warm and happy.
The only thing that I found a little difficult to handle was just how many different nurses took care of me in the 5 days that I was there. There were a lot of staff changes and the nurses didn't seem to work 2 days in a row. I never knew who was going to walk in the room. They all were up to speed with what was going on with my recovery so I never felt that my care was compromised with all the changes.
Here is one tip that I learned.. I was placed in room 258 which used to be the Nurses lounge. It is the biggest room on the maternity ward. It is a corner room so there is lots of sun. I was lucky enough to have the room to myself for all 5 days. Winthrop's policy is to have private rooms for as many people as they can accomodate - even if you haven't asked for one. I didn't spend the money for a private room and I just got lucky. The private rooms are really small.
I hope that this helps any of you expecting Moms or Moms that are still thinking about what hospital to deliver in. Good luck to everyone and thanks for responding to my original post. Now I have to figure out how to get Trevor to take naps :-)
Kerry HS - did you end up delivering with Sumersille or with Hanauer? I am debating which provider to join - the midwife or the doctor. i had a midwife with my first pregnancy but did not like her at all - but it was just that particular midwife. i would like to use a midwife now, but it seems that in this area there arent as many options. how did you like sumersille? did she seem very competent, encouraging, patient? did you end up using an epidural - was she supportive either way? how is the hospital with fetal monitoring?
anyone else have experience with dr. hanauer? any natural births? how is she?
Hi Garden City Mama - I delivered with Hanauer via c-section. All went well. I have never heard anything other than great things about her. I also met her partner at the hospital - Dr. Dolisi - he was also excellent. When are you due? BTW - I am a garden city Mama as well - I live in the Western section. Good luck.
Re: Delivering at Winthrop - any tips?
My neice, nephew and stepdaughter were born there. Its a great hospital.
My fiances stepfather is an attending gyno there.
I live in Valley Stream and my Doc is Levine (right across the street from the hospital on Mineola Blvd), he's awesome.
When are you due?
Due Jan 13, but will be have a scheduled c-section. Hasn't been scheduled yet, but should be right around that date...
What about you?
Due March 11th, no c-section.
I wish you and your baby all the best!
