Outgrown clothing

Do you keep most of the clothing that your child outgrows? Or do you hand it on to friends/goodwill or sell it?

A few bits and pieces I have been keeping incase we have another boy but I am also thinking that if we do have another boy I don't really want him to have Coop's hand me downs either. Anyway over the past month or so I have been selling some stuff on Ebay & I just looked at my PayPal account - I am now $3,210.77 richer!! Boy some people pay top dollar for used clothing!!

Re: Outgrown clothing

  • I have a friend with a 2 y.o. DD and a 5 month old DD and we just trade clothes back and forth.  It's great because new clothes get added into the rotation as grandparents buy cute little outfits as gifts, I find some outfit I have to have from Carter's, etc.

I think once both of us are done having kids, we'll consign what's left and split the profit.

  • I am keeping it all for now since we're planning to have another baby.  If it's a boy, we will reuse the clothing and if it's a girl, we will either give them to a friend, donate them, and/or consign them.
  • I kept all of Max's stuff, except what was stained or just worn out. Now that we're having a girl, I need to sort through it and pull out what will work for her. Then at some point I will choose a few of Max's things to keep and consign the rest.

  • 80% of DD's clothing is handed down from friends and purchased at thrift stores. I pass on what I can to friends or goodwill. I'm not keeping much for #2, just because I hate storing clothes for long periods of time.

  • I keep Jillian's for Hayden, and then when Hayden out grows it I give it to my sister.

  • I keep the good stuff to let my friend who has a boy exactly 1 year younger than T to go through, I will try to sell the rest at a garage sale, then I will donate it.

  • I ended up keeping most of Blake's clothes for Brayden but I wish I would have only kept a few things. I still bought Brayden lots of new clothes and now he has way to much stuff.  Now I have a ton of stuff to sell sometime soon!

This. I keep throwing things in buckets and passing them along to SIL since I cannot store much. I have clothes all the way up to 3T - I just pulled a bunch of 2T stuff that fits (like the "Momma's Boy" shirt below). My clotheshorse friend will just keep passing them along to me as her kids outgrow - or selling them to me at a major discount. I am SO GLAD I had a boy for this very reason.

$3K for resell?!?! That is ridonkulously cool...good for you (and also frightening how much you might have spent originally - but way to recoup!)

  • I am keeping about 60% of it. She had enough in the first year for 2 girls, so I'm just keeping my favorite and gave the rest to my cousin who is having a girl. Once we find out what we're having, I'll either keep it all or go through it again and only keep my favorites!

  • I got rid of most of her 0-12 month items. Replacing them has only been about $65 so far, and I'll buy just a few more specific pieces. I did a post on my method. I'm pretty sure it doesn't violate the TOS if I link to it since I don't sell anything.

I had a good laugh at myself for the only having one line :)

Fortuneatly for me I brought 90% of Coop's clothing when we were living in the USA. A Ralph Lauren polo here in Australia is around $100 compared to the $20 I paid for it in the USA -so infact I got more than I originally paid for many used items I sold :)

  • I only kept a few nb-9mo items that were my favorite and passed the rest onto my SIL and a needy family w encountered. I am proud of myself that right now he only has a tub of clothing that does not fit because we do not have room to store things. Whatever is left once we stop having children will be sold and donated. Kudos on the awesome return!
